Xaragua[]
The cacicazgo or chiefdom of Xaragua, also written as Jaragua, was one of the five chiefdoms in the island of Quisqueya (now known as Hispaniola), stretching across the southwest; delimited to the north by the cacicazgo of Marién, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, to the east by the cacicazgo of Maguana, and to the west by the Jamaica Channel. Jaragua emerged as the union of two previous cacicazgos, Zui and Yáquimo.
Anacaona[]
Anacaona, whose name means Golden Flower, was a Taíno cacica, or female cacique (chief), religious expert, poet, and areíto composer born in Xaragua. During her reign, she and her people were ambushed and massacred by the Spanish while hosting a festival. Since her demise, however, she has become an important figure in Haitian culture and contemporary Taino culture in particular, who celebrate her efforts to resist the Spanish.

Many blessings upon you, Anacaona, benevolent cacica of Xaragua! Overseeing the height of not one but two powerful Taíno chiefdoms, you nevertheless were forced to navigate a brutal and terrifying new reality as strangers from the east arrived and slaughtered their way across Quisqueya. Through careful diplomacy and compromise, you attempted to spare your lands from the fate that had befallen all four other chiefdoms on the island, including that of your husband, who had bravely yet futilely challenged the Spanish - perhaps biding your time and gathering information for a more successful revolt of your own. Unfortunately, however, even your best was not enough. The gold-hungry Spaniards took advantage of your hospitality and festivities, and slaughtered your people to the last man, though you fought to your last breath to make them see reason and end their senseless violence.
Anacaona, you now find yourself once again in a tumultuous time and an unfamiliar environment, with your people in need of your guidance. Will you grow your humble chiefdom into a thriving metropolis? And when trouble inevitably comes knocking once more, will you again tread the path of peace, or will you go down another road? Will you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?war may be fought with the pen as much as the sword, your chance is now. Can you cement your power as Queen and undermine those who stand against you? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?
