Overview[]

Wessex[]

Wessex, literally "Kingdom of the West Saxons" was one of the major anglo saxon kingdoms in great britain prior to the unification of England. Legend has it that two brothers, Cerdic and Cynric, founded the kingdom in the 6th Century AD, with all future kings descended from them. While traditionally encompassing the English counties of Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Dorset, Wessex later came to control Sussex, Surrey and Kent, all previously independent kingdoms.

Egbert[]

Ecgberht's ancestry is little known, however it is said he was born of royal stock. Exiled at a young age to Francia, he was taught during the period of Charlemagne's reign and picked up the art of governance while in Gaul. After the death of the Mercian king Offa, there was little support for the pretender on the throne of Wessex. Ecgberht return the the islands and quickly took the crown with the support of Charlemagne. A strong general as well as an excellent administrator, that was when the golden period of West Saxon domination began.

Expansion was rapid in Ecgberht's period of control. He ravaged the Dumnonii country side, and won an important battle against Mercia at Ellandun. In 829, things turned from good to great when Ecgberht invaded Mercia proper, forcing the Mercian King into exile. After accomplishing this feat, he was given the title "Bretwalda," meaning Wide-Ruler. Only a few in history would earn this title.

Ecgberht, despite losing influence after the defeat of the Mercians, had successfully changed the scope of Anglo-Saxon warfare in England. Though Wiglaf would soon return to the throne, Ecgberht's reign leads a marvelous tale of a king's rise and fall. It was, however, a rule backed by Frankish hands, and when Francia could no longer support Ecgberht, the kingdom of Wessex quickly collapsed. Ecgberht died in 839, leaving his grandson, Alfred the Great, to reunite the Saxons in England.

Dawn of Man[]

"Hail, great king Ecgberht, Bretwalda of the British Isles. You ascended to the throne of Wessex in a time of flux, following a period of Mercian Domination. Only you would seize the opportunity to rise up and unite the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms. Under your rule, England was united for the first time since the Romans left four hundred years ago. However brief this supremacy was, you proved that it was possible to unify such a fractured land. Your conquest paved the way for future kings to unify England for good, some hundred years later.
