La serenissima ("the most serene" or "sublime") Republic of Venice was built on islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea and became the greatest seaport of medieval and Renaissance Europe, the continent's commercial and cultural link with the East. Settled initially by Roman refugees from German and Hun invasions, in 726 AD the citizens of the city rose in rebellion against Byzantine rule, declared themselves a free republic, and elected the first of the 117 doges that would administer the city-state. From the 9th through the 12th centuries Venice developed into a naval and commercial power that dominated the Mediterranean trade routes from the Levant and Orient, from Morocco and Spain. Venetian merchant-explorers fanned out across Asia and Africa, bringing ever more wealth to the city, as well as making it one of the cultural centers of Europe. Venetian seamen would challenge both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires for supremacy along Mediterranean shores. Eventually, for reasons including the discovery of the New World and dynastic struggles among the European nations, Venice would decline in wealth, influence and power. In 1797 AD Napoleon conquered the city, and it would never again be an independent entity. However, since then Venice has held an unrivaled place in the world's collective imagination. The spectacle of its canals, marbled churches, frescoed palaces, and magnificent works of art reflected in the sparkling waters of the lagoon basking under blue skies has made it one of the most romantic locales of modern civilization.

Domenico Selvo[]

Domenico Selvo was the 31st Doge of Venice, serving from 1071 to 1084. During his reign as Doge, his domestic policies, the alliances that he forged, and the battles that the Venetian military won and lost laid the foundations for much of the subsequent foreign and domestic policy of the Republic of Venice. He avoided confrontations with the Byzantine Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Roman Catholic Church at a time in European history when conflict threatened to upset the balance of power. At the same time, he forged new agreements with the major nations that would set up a long period of prosperity for the Republic of Venice. Through his military alliance with the Byzantine Empire, Emperor Alexios I Komnenos awarded Venice economic favors with the declaration of a golden bull that would allow for the development of the republic's international trade over the next few centuries.

Dawn of Man[]

Salutations, Domenico Selvo, beloved of the people of Venice! You came to power at the demands of the Venetian public, and during your thirteen-year tenure, you proved that their enthusiasm was well founded. A deft negotiator, you managed to maintain successful commercial relationships with the Holy Roman Empire, the Byzantines, and the Papacy - at a time when those three powers all loathed one another. You were also one of the most significant patrons of the construction at St. Mark's Basilica, a church that has been a longtime symbol of Venetian glory. Your military record was more mixed, with one defeat leading to your ultimate disposition, but overall the majority of your naval engagements ended in victory for Venice.

Art by Grant

Most serene prince, the Venetian people who once clamored for your ascension are calling out again for your return. Can you restore Venice's position as the commercial nexus of the Adriatic, profiting off of all of its neighbors? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Ah, I see God has brought me a visitor this morning! Well met. I am Domenico Selvo, Doge of the Republic of Venice."

Defeat: "My reign comes to its end, then. If God sees fit to humble me, who am I to resist?"
