Utetera[]
The Sultanate of Utetera, also known as Tippu Tip's State, was one of the short-lived Swahili-Arab sultanates established in the eastern Congo during the 19th century. It was ruled from the town of Kasongo by the notorious slave trader Tippu Tip, and exported vasts numbers of captive people back to the slave ports of Zanzibar before ultimately being absorbed into the Congo Free State.
Tippu Tip[]
Tippu Tip was an Afro-Omani ivory merchant, explorer, colonial governor, plantation master, and slave trader active in 19th century Central Africa. Loyal to the Sultans of Zanzibar, Tippu led numerous expeditions into the Congo Basin in search of wares and victims. There he would supplant a local ruler to become the "Sultan of Utetera", and went on to interact frequently with Western explorers - who came to regard Tippu Tip as a vital guide and asset in their colonial adventures.
