Overview

Ukraine

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest European country after Russia, which it borders to the east and northeast. During the Middle Ages, Ukraine was the site of early Slavic expansion and the area later became a key centre of East Slavic culture under the state of Kyivan Rus', which emerged in the 9th century. The area was then contested, divided, and ruled by a variety of external powers for the next 600 years, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Tsardom of Russia. Ukrainian nationalism developed, and following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic was formed. The Bolsheviks consolidated control over much of the former empire and established the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Ukraine gained independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved, and declared itself neutral. A series of mass demonstrations, known as the Euromaidan, led to the establishment of a new government in 2014 after a revolution. Russia then unilaterally annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula; and pro-Russian unrest culminated in a war between Russian-backed separatists and government forces in eastern Ukraine. Russia later launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Mykhailo Hrushevsky

Mykhailo Hrushevsky was a Ukrainian academician, politician, historian and statesman who was one of the most important figures of the Ukrainian national revival of the early 20th century. Considered the country's greatest modern historian, the foremost organiser of scholarship, the leader of the pre-revolution Ukrainian national movement, he was the leader of the Central Rada, and a leading cultural figure in the Ukrainian SSR during the 1920s.

It was you who wrote the History of Ukraine-Rusʹ, which definitively laid out the national history of Ukraine, tracing its roots back all the way from ancient Scythia to the Kyivan Rus, through Ruthenia to the Cossacks, as part of Ukraine’s national history. You stood up during the Ukrainian National Revolution to become the President of the Central Rada which laid the roots for democracy in Ukraine deep. Guiding Ukraine through the chaotic world that its modern state had been birthed into, you became a national hero. However, events conspired against you, and the Central Rada was abolished via coup. Leaving for exile, the governments following proved too distasteful, and you could only accept the fate of Ukraine as a centralist and repressive regime under Russia’s thumb.
