Overview[]

Turkey[]

Once the centre of the Ottoman Empire, the modern republic was established in the 1920s by nationalist leader Kemal Ataturk. Straddling the continents of Europe and Asia, Turkey's strategically important location has given it major influence in the region - and control over the entrance to the Black Sea. Progress towards democracy and a market economy was halting after Ataturk's death in 1938, and the army - seeing itself as guarantor of the constitution - repeatedly ousted governments seen as challenging secular values. Joining the European Union has been a longstanding ambition. Membership talks were launched in 2005, but have stalled over serious misgivings about Turkey's human rights record.

Ataturk[]

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was an army officer who founded an independent Republic of Turkey out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. He then served as Turkey’s first president from 1923 until his death in 1938, implementing reforms that rapidly secularized and westernized the country. Under his leadership, the role of Islam in public life shrank drastically, European-style law codes came into being, the office of the sultan was abolished and new language and dress requirements were mandated. But although the country was nominally democratic, Atatürk at times stifled opposition with an authoritarian hand.

Ataturk Leader Scene

Art by Viregel

The Turkish people bow in your presence, illustrious President Ataturk. Your bravery while defending Gallipolli during the Great War won you respect throughout the Turkish nation, who would find itself divided amongst the imperial powers at the war's end. You took command of the Turkish liberation forces and succeeded in securing the independence of the Turkish people from colonial rule. While millions across Turkey lamented the death of the Ottoman Empire and reminisced of the glory they had once known, you instead looked towards the future. Your efforts to reform the Turkish government and society were ambitious, eschewing long standing cornerstones of Turkish society like the caliphate, traditional clothing, Sharia law, and the writing script. Your efforts culminated in the transformation of Turkey into the most modern Middle Eastern nation and a powerhouse in the region. Turkish citizens were proud to repeat your quote "Happy is he who is a Turk!"

Visionary president, the future of Turkey is unclear and your people need you to lead the nation once again into greatness. Can you convince the Turkish people of your vision and lead them to modernity? Can you validate your claim to being "Kemal", perfect, by bringing a glory to Turkey unseen for centuries? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: Welcome to Republic of Turkey. My people seek the path of enlightenment, a path that will bring them great peace and prosperity. Do you search for this path as well or do you cling to dogmatic customs?

Defeat: Our life is truly hellish here.

Unique Cultural Interface[]

Our people are now throwing away traditional headgear for Panama hats and demanding a new alphabet - except the Kurds of course, they don't have a say in the matter. I fear the rest of the world will soon develop an irrational desire to reform everything as well.
