Overview[]

The Zunbils[]

The Zunbil dynasty was a royal dynasty that ruled south of the Hindu Kush, in present-day Zabul Province in Afghanistan. Existing from the early 7th century until their eventual destruction at the hands of the Saffarids in 870 AD, the Zunbils were constantly in conflict with their encroaching Arab neighbours during the Islamization of the Middle East. The Zunbils often inflicted sharp defeats on the Muslim armies, and stemmed the flow of Islam into India for more than two centuries. Their own faith was related to the Hindu god Surya, which they referred to as 'Zun'.

Rutbil[]

Rutbil is first mentioned in Arab sources dating to around 666 CE. Rutbil may have been the brother or nephew of Barha Tegin, and may have been appointed as the governor in Zabulistan by Barha Tegin after he conquered the region from Ghar-ilchi. Rutbil and the king of Kabul campaigned together against the Arabs after Abdur Rahman ibn Samura was replaced as the governor of Sistan. Rabi ibn Ziyad al-Harithi upon assuming governorship in 671 CE attacked Rutbil at Bost, and drove him to al-Rukhkhaj. Rabi's successor Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Bakra continued the war upon being appointed in 673 CE, leading Rutbil to negotiate a peace treaty for both Kabul and Zabul, in which the governor of Sistan acknowledged control of these territories by Rutbil and the King of Kabul..

Dawn of Man[]

May the light of Zun guide you, Rutbil of Zabulistan. You are the founder of the Zunbil dynasty, a family that ruled much of southern Afghanistan during the 7th and 8th centuries. After splitting from your neighbors, the Turk Shahis, your people would come to define the resistance against Islamic expansion into the region. Time and time again, the Umayyad Caliphate to your west threw at you their "Armies of Destruction", only to find themselves defeated and forced to pay tribute to your greatness. Later, travelers from distant China would come to marvel at your works, and document your way of life for future generations.

Strategy[]

Zunbils Icon

The Zunbils are a tall, religious civilization with a focus on increasing growth in their cities. The Zunbil Unique Ability, Justice-Giver, grants a Faith bonus for the Zunbils if they destroy enemy religious units. To take advantage of this it is important to frequently make war on civilizations of other religions that are trying to convert you, in order to take direct action against their prosletyzing. Furthermore, Justice-Giver grants Food to the Capital whenever an Inqusitor is used to shore up your own religion in your empire.

The Zunbil Unique Unit, the Ayyaar, is a rough terrain interceptor that replaces the Pikeman. When on or near Roads, it gains a considerable 30% combat strength bonus, making it a good unit for defending the entry points into your empire. This can be teamed with its +1 movement when beginning a turn on or adjacent to Hills or Mountains, so a good strategy would be to fortify the unit on rough terrain and use its mobility to burst towards oncoming enemy units.

The Zunbil Unique Building is the Temple of Zun, which replaces the regular Temple. In addition to a bonus +1 Happiness, the Temple of Zun also allows the city to enter We Love the King Day for five turns whenever an Inquisitor successfully leaves it with only followers of your own religion. Keeping your cities in cycles of WLTKD will ensure bonus growth across your entire civilization.
