Overview[]

The Yanomami[]

The Yanomami are a group of approximately 35,000 indigenous people who live in some 200–250 villages in the Amazon rainforest on the border between Venezuela and Brazil. Yanomaman languages comprise four main varieties: Ninam, Sanumá, Waiká, and Yanomamö. Gold was found in Yanomami territory in the early 1970s and the resulting influx of miners brought disease, alcoholism, and violence. Yanomami culture was severely endangered. From 1987 to 1990, the Yanomami population was severely affected by malaria, mercury poisoning, malnutrition, and violence due to an influx of garimpeiros searching for gold in their territory. In 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused the government of his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro of having committed genocide against the Yanomami, citing widespread starvation and contamination of water supplies by miners, whose illegal activities were unrestricted under Bolsonaro.

Davi Kopenawa[]

Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, born Toototobi, is a Yanomami shaman and spokesperson who is known for his advocacy regarding tribal issues and Amazon rainforest conservation. His most notable work is the book The Falling Sky. His nickname ‘Kopenawa’, meaning hornet, was given to him in recognition of his ability to fight for his people.

You must play the role of Atlas of your people, oh shaman Davi Kopenawa, hornet of the Yanomami. You have long been a spokesperson for your tribe, from helping aid organisations understand your plight to bringing your message to the world directly, through spoken and written word. And have no doubt, the plight of your people is a dire one. From contaminated water to infringing gold miners, from diseases which you have low immunity to a former government which did not care, your people have endured. You have worked to restore your own people to their land and resources, safe from the gold miners and rubber tappers, establishing organisations such as Hutukara to build institutions that burn with the same passion as you. You have been proactive in building for the future, setting up educational foundations to teach Yanomami children skills such as literacy.

Oh passionate Davi Kopenawa, the fight is not over. Tides in Brazil might be shifting, but the greedy colonisers will not give up their privileges an cede your rightful land to you without a fight. You must prepare your people and continue to speak for them wherever and whenever you can. Can you spread the message of your people far and wide? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: Welcome to the lands of the Yanomami. I am Davi Kopenawa, it's steward, and I will protect it with all my strength

Defeat: My people are wiped out. You must destroy all photographs of us, because future generations will look at our photographs and be too ashamed at such a crime against humanity.
