This mod requires Brave New World.
Overview[]
The Yali[]
The Yali are an indigenous people of northwestern New Guinea, just to the east of the Baliem Valley, currently located within the Indonesian state of Papua. They are closely related to the Dani people who live within the valley proper.
Wimayuk Wandik[]
Wimayuk Wandik was a leader of the Yali village of Uwambo. He became known to the West after sheltering several Americans who survived a plane crash in the Baliem Valley in 1945. Though he shared no common language with the Americans, who nicknamed him "Chief Pete", Wimayuk advocated for their protection and kept them safe until their eventual rescue.
Wimayuk was known for his adaptable disposition and interest in trade; he would often lead expeditions as far as twenty miles to trade with the neighboring Dani people. When he first met the survivors of the plane crash, Wimayuk assumed that the Yali legend of Uluayek - which held that sky spirits would one day return to herald a new era - had come true. Wimayuk judged that the new era could be a favorable one, and thus that it would be beneficial to build good relationships with the sky spirits; accordingly, he pushed for the people of Uwambo to protect the Americans, winning the debate against a rival faction that was opposed to sheltering sky spirits. Wimayuk would later also welcome a medic who paradropped into the region to assist the Americans before their eventual rescue.
Dawn of Man[]
"Hal-loak-nak, Wimayuk Wandik! A vigorous and creative leader of the Yali village of Uwambo, your flexible attitude and eye for alliance-building served your people well when a group of injured Americans unexpectedly crashed down from the sky. By convincing your people to welcome the new arrivals, who you viewed as the heralds of a potentially fortunate new era, you ensured that your brief contact with the Western world was a happy one characterized by frequent gift exchange.
O Wimayuk, while the new era you foresaw has come to pass, its realities are more complex than you likely hoped for. The publicity surrounding the American plane crash and the rescue of its survivors led missionaries to discover the Baliem Valley; today, most Yali have left behind their traditional lifestyle, and have become Christians seeking to make their way in the globalized world of the twenty-first century. Can you reassert the Yali's legacy as a venerable culture, free of the Dutch and Indonesian yokes? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"
Introduction: "It's not often we see visitors in the Baliem Valley! I am known as Wimayuk Wandik, the kain of the village you see before you."
Defeat: "Slay me if you must, but my descendants will avenge whatever misdeeds are done to me."
