Overview[]

The Xavante[]

The Xavante are an indigenous people of Brazil, located in the eastern part of the modern state of Mato Grosso in Brazil. They have a dualistic societal structure, made up of two clans, the Awawe and Po'reza'ono. They speak the Xavante language, which is part of the Je family, and became well known in Brazil at the end of the 1940s thanks to the government's campaign to publicise its 'March to the West'. Today, there are approximately 30,000 Xavante.

Apoena[]

Apoena was a Xavante chief and elder who gained prominence in Brazil for his complex and nuanced interactions with Brazilian society, with the goal of "taming" the white population and allowing for peaceful contact. Starting in the 1940s and carrying through the 1980s, Apoena attempted to preserve the Xavante culture.

Hail, Chief Apoena, cunning and thoughtful leader of the Xavante. Your people experienced horrific violence and cruel treatment, but you were determined to keep and develop your culture, and not lose it to the sands of time. To protect your culture, a culture of growing maize and hunting tapir, a culture of Australasian origin and one which had migrated across the river Araguaia, you devised an ingenious strategy to "tame" the colonisers of the frontier. Through political diplomacy you organised peace conferences between your people and settled white man, publicised your culture through Brazilian media, visited regional capitals, and organised exchanged, where non-native people would visit your villages. By also using the colonial tools provided by groups such as FUNAI, you protected your society, keeping your traditional customs alive.

Oh guileful Apoena, your people now call on you protect them once again. The frontier is once again encroaching upon your native lands, and your people call upon you to act, to keep them safe. Your expertise is necessary to avoid conflict while still maintaining the land and your peoples best interest. Can you once again "tame" the people of Brazil to defend the boundaries of your land? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: Rowa'awe, wanderer. This is the land of the Xavante, my people -- we're glad to have discovered and finally established communication with one of your kind!

Defeat: It seems that we could not tame your savage kind in the end. Our songs will echo into eternity, and you cannot silence us.
