The West Indies[]
The Spanish West Indies, Spanish Caribbean or the Spanish Antilles, were Spanish territories in the Caribbean. The islands that became the Spanish West Indies were the focus of the voyages of the Spanish expedition of Christopher Columbus to the Americas. Largely due to the familiarity that Spaniards gained from Columbus's voyages, the islands were also the first lands to be permanently colonized by Europeans in the Americas. The Spanish West Indies were also the most enduring part of Spain's American Empire, only ending with Cuba and Puerto Rico being surrendered in 1898 at the end of the Spanish–American War.
Christopher Columbus[]
Christopher Columbus was the first Governor of the Spanish West Indies. An explorer and navigator from the Republic of Genoa, in 1492 he became the first European to contact the native inhabitants of the American continent while looking for a western sea passage to the Indies, hoping to profit from the lucrative spice trade. His landing place was an island in the Bahamas, known by its native inhabitants as Guanahani. He then visited the islands now known as Cuba and Hispaniola, establishing a colony in what is now Haiti. Columbus made three further voyages to the Americas, exploring the Lesser Antilles in 1493, Trinidad and the northern coast of South America in 1498, and the east coast of Central America in 1502. As a colonial governor, Columbus was accused by some of his contemporaries of significant brutality and removed from the post. Columbus's strained relationship with the Crown of Castile and its colonial administrators in America led to his arrest and removal from Hispaniola in 1500, and later to protracted litigation over the privileges he and his heirs claimed were owed to them by the Crown.

A traveler of the sea from a young age, you developed a plan to sail into the great unknown and find a route to the lucrative East Indies, petitioning several hesitant monarchs before finally being sponsored by the Spanish monarchy to make a punitive voyage. What you discovered, however, was mot the East Indies (no matter how much you believed otherwise) but something much more shocking - the edges of an entire new world, almost entirely unknown to Europeans prior. Gaining fame across Europe for this discovery, your legacy has been tarnished by your brutality toward the native Taino during your governorship of your new colony, which saw you removed from your post. Nevertheless, it was you who brought the New and Old Worlds into major contact for the first time in history, forever altering the course of the entire world.
Columbus, you find yourself now in a whole new unfamiliar world begging to be explored and exploited. Will you discover all that this exotic new realm has to offer? Will you gain all the riches you seek? Will you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
