Overview

Washoe

The Washoe are a Native American people from near Lake Tahoe at the border between California and Nevada in the Great Basin. Their peak numerical strength before contact with settlers may have been 1,500. Linguistically isolated from the other Great Basin Indians, they spoke a language of the Hokan language stock, known as Washo.

Gumalanga

Gumalanga, known as Epesuwa and Captain Jim, was a Washoe leader who, in 1892, took his people's concerns to President Benjamin Harrison. He made his journey during the transformation of Washoe lands from the pine groves to mining, milling, lumber, fishing and farming.

Protect your people and your land, oh modest Gumalanga, leader among the Washoe people. It was you, Gumalanga, also known as Captain Jim, who went to President Benjamin Harrison, presented him with a pinyon, bringing attention to your people's loss of their traditional lands in 1882. And you succeeded in regaining some of your traditional land, where the pinyon nut groves grew. But even in your old age you were still fighting, seeking redress from the government for the wrongdoings of the settlers who had plundered your land for minerals, agriculture, and water.

Oh resolute Gumalanga, you are called once again to shed a light on the plight of your people. Dark forces are at play in your lands, and now as then, it falls upon the people least able to fight back against the tyranny of a government that does not care about your people. Can you raise your people up once more? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: Welcome, friend, to the lands of the Washoe. Take this, the food from the pine nut trees is what my people eat.
