Overview[]

The Wahgi[]

The Waghi live amongst the New Guinea Highlands, also known as the Central Range or the Central Cordillera. The range spans through the centre of the island of New Guinea and splits the island into north and south sides of the range. The Papua New Guinean side of the island contains the Wahgi Valley within the Western Highlands Province. The Wahgi Valley is no only home to the Wahgi peoples but also the Wahgi river that flows south from the Highlands. In contrast to the sparsely populated communities following traditional tribal villages, the Western Highlands area has considerable agricultural activity and urban settlements. This includes the country's third-largest city, Mount Hagen, near a volcano of the same way. Mt. Hagen is the most populous city in the Western Highlands, overlooks the Wahgi valley near Rondon Ridge. The Eastern Highlands are more populated than the Western Highlands, but the Wahgi have found themselves a niche in highland crop farms to sustain a relatively high population. There is evidence that the Highlands have been settled for over 50,000 years but it took until the 20th century for the Wahgi Valley to get connected to the broader world through Port Moresby in the south. Although the island of the new guinea had been explored for centuries since the 1520s, the inland mountains hiding the urban centres of the Wahgi people were not so quickly discovered. However, this is not to say that the Wahgi were completely isolated. The staple crop in the highlands, the Sweet Potato, was an import from South America through the various peoples of the Pacific. The Wahgi had interactions throughout the island but were uncontacted by Europeans until the late 19th century.

Bol'im[]

Prior to colonization, the Wahgi culture was very decentralized politically, and lacked any sort of a unified structure or overall "leader". On occasion, villages could be united by a single influential person, be they a warrior, sorceror, or just someone with a lot of wealth, towards a common goal like war or an elaborate festival. The Wahgi practiced a religious system driven by ancestor worship, and believed that nothing happened meaninglessly. A child cuts his finger with a knife because the knife was guided by a displeased soul from the realm of the dead. A dog attacks a person because someone's displeased deceased grandmother has urged it to do so. A man drops dead because colonial authorities forced him to work on a construction project alongside workers from a village that were his own village's historical enemies, and this angered the souls of those who fought wars against that village. Bol'im is a term used to refer to the collective souls of the ancestors, whose willpower permeates this world.

Dawn of Man[]

"Stand proud, mighty Bol'im, guiding light of the Wahgi Peoples! Your people are brave and cunning, showing great skill in both warfare and in cultivating the fierce terrain of the New Guinea Highlands. Living in isolation from the world at large for hundreds of years, it was not until the 1930s that colonialist Europeans set foot in your home valleys. And through the fires of World War 2's frontlines, your world was forever changed. Though the outside world's influence has seeped in, the Wahgi still remain. Your warriors have turned to artists in these times of peace, but not only has your culture survived, it has thrived, becoming grander and more influential than ever before.

Please join us, merciful Bol'im, to once again lead the Wahgi through battles and harvests. Will your hands guide the knife of the soldier, or the brush of the painter? Can you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "An outsider enters our valley...? If you come in peace, we shall celebrate, and feast upon pigs and sweet potatoes. If in search of war... then there is still reason to celebrate."

Defeat: "If you strike me down, my soul shall haunt you and everything you hold sacred until I've guided a blade into your throat, in turn. Then, we will battle once more..."
