The Ume Sámi[]

The Ume are the second most southern Sámi subgroup, sandwiched between the Southern Sámi and the Pite Sámi. They engaged in broadly similar subsistence activities to their neighbours - seasonal reindeer herding, fishing, and moving between summer and winter dwellings. The majority of the Ume population was what the Swedish referred to as 'Skogssamer' - 'Forest Sámi' -, this meaning they lived and migrated within the forest realms. The Ume were particularly quick to engage with Swedish merchants. In the end, as Sweden and Norway turned their attentions northwards, the Ume Sámi were slowly assimilated, and today the language and identity is one of the most endangered among the Sámi groups.

A truly legendary figure, Rijkuo-Maja has innumerable larger-than-life tales woven about her prowess in both the usually male profession of Nåjjde (Shaman) and the economic field. Such was her wealth that she acquired the sobriquet 'Rijkuo' - 'rich'. She is said to have owned over 3000 reindeer and created vast pasturage for them, with the help of her personal hounds - the wolves of the forest. She is said to have shown off her immense wealth at public gatherings, wearing gold and silver, as well as donning five gaptties at once regardless of the weather. She is said to have been so influential that all the Sámi around her were her vassals, and even the Swedes braving the north to trade needed her personal blessing to do business. She is said to have produced a great thunderstorm with the power of her drumming and her striking of the waters of Lake Mausjaur. She is said to have had sacred sieidi on the slopes of Akkanalke and the lake, and that a secret hoard of coins is still waiting on the mountain for someone to find it. She is said to have bent the natural world to her will with sacrifices to the ravens, eagles and gods at her thunder-mark. She is said to have had such power that even after her death, she punishes those who badmouth her. At the end, after she was given a Christian burial at Arvidsjaur church against her wishes, all of her reindeer rose, ran to the coast, and vanished into the ice on the Baltic Sea. So ends the legend of Rijkuo-Maja.

Dawn of Man[]

"Greetings, esteemed shaman Rijkuo-Maja. Not content only with your position as a Noaidi, usually dominated by men, you accumulated such wealth that legends could only speak your name in the same breath as 'Rijkuo' - 'rich'. The tales of your monetary and spiritual prowess abound, from owning no less than three thousand reindeer, to your ability to catch exactly the type of fish you wanted. Despite the myriad deer under your purview, you were able to tell each and every one apart from a distance, and you even had the service of the birds and wolves of the forest as well. Your economic dominance extended far beyond your home, and even the Swedish merchants coming to trade with your people needed your personal approval to so much as set foot in Sábmie. Even in old age you went to your thunder-mark and could bring down rain from a dry sky with your sacred rituals. And your power extended even after your death - after you were given a Christian burial against your wishes, your entire herd of reindeer cried out in anguish and ran to the coast, where they disappeared into the sea among the ice floes.

Now, the Ume language fades from the lips of the Sámi, the Nåjjde no longer beats their drum, and the shepherds profane your name. Can you make the Sieidis sacred once again? Can you create a herd of deer like none have seen before? Can your people learn in their own way once again? Can you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Hm, a newcomer. Do you seek spiritual aid, or have you come to trade with my people"

Defeat: "You have won, outsider. ...Perhaps you should keep an eye on the deer and the ravens of your land."
