Overview[]
The Umayyads[]
The Umayyads were a merchant family based in Mecca. They had converted to Islam in 627, becoming prominent supporters of Mohammed and his successors. The early Umayyad caliphs were based in Damascus, Syria, and the Syrian army formed the backbone of the Arab military forces. The Umayyads expanded Arabian power east, building outposts and sending expeditions into Central Asia and northwestern India. In addition the Umayyads launched the invasion of North Africa. In the 7th century they constructed a Mediterranean fleet with which they launched a series of unsuccessful raids against Christian Constantinople.
The Umayyad Caliphate reached its zenith under the reign of Abd al-Malik. In the west, Abd's armies overran much of Spain, while in the east the Caliphate invaded Sind in India and conquered Bukhara, Samarkand, Khwarezm, and many more places too hard to spell. al-Malik also oversaw a reorganization of the Caliphate's bureaucracy, economy, and the institution of a post service. During his reign the arts flourished, particularly architecture.
The empire suffered a decline after Abd al-Malik's death. A series of mediocre caliphs combined with economic troubles and military reverses in the east and west fueled tribal rivalries within the Caliphate, and in 750 the Umayyads were defeated and overthrown at the Battle of the Great Zab River.
Al-Walid I[]
Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, commonly known as al-Walid I, was the sixth Umayyad caliph, ruling from October 705 until his death. He was the eldest son of his predecessor Caliph Abd al-Malik. As a prince, he led annual raids against the Byzantines in 695–698 and built or restored fortifications along the Syrian Desert route to Mecca. He became the heir apparent after the death of Abd al-Malik's brother and designated successor, Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan, in 704.
Al-Walid largely continued his father's policies of centralization and expansion, and heavily depended on al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, his father's powerful viceroy over the eastern half of the Caliphate. During his reign, Umayyad armies conquered the Maghreb, Hispania, Sind and Transoxiana, expanding the Caliphate to its greatest territorial extent. War spoils from the conquests allowed al-Walid to finance public works of great magnitude, including the Great Mosque of Damascus, the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. He was the first caliph to institute programs for social welfare, aiding the poor and handicapped in Syria. Although it is difficult to ascertain al-Walid's direct role in the affairs of his caliphate, his reign was marked by domestic peace and prosperity and likely represented the peak of Umayyad power.
Dawn of Man[]
"Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, worthiest of Caliphs, sixth of the line of Umayya, your people were a dominant mercantile clan seated in Mecca at the time of rise of Islam. Initially opposed to the teachings of the Prophet, the Umayyad soon allied themselves with the fledgling religion and spread it through the Middle East and Northern Africa and even to Spain.

Leaderscene by Urdnot
Al-Walid, poets stand in awe of your greatness! You conquered unassailable enemies, solidified your power in far-off lands, and build wonderous mosques. Yet you were also a champion of the needy, instituting systems of aid for the poor and handicapped. Your people now look to you to lead the Umayyad into a new world. Conquer your enemies, light up the darkness, and build a civilization that will stand the test of time!"
Introduction: Peace unto you, and the mercy of God and His Blessings too. Men call me al-Walid, and I am the commander of the faithful.
Defeat: And now I weep copious tears. After today, there’s no reasons to store them.
