The Timucua[]

The Timucua were a Native American people who lived in Northeast and North Central Florida and southeast Georgia. They were the largest indigenous group in that area and consisted of about 35 chiefdoms, many leading thousands of people. The various groups of Timucua spoke several dialects of the Timucua language. The territory occupied by Timucua speakers stretched from the Altamaha River and Cumberland Island in present-day Georgia as far south as Lake George in central Florida, and from the Atlantic Ocean west to the Aucilla River in the Florida Panhandle, though it reached the Gulf of Mexico at no more than a couple of points. While alliances and confederacies arose between the chiefdoms from time to time, the Timucua were never organized into a single political unit. The various groups of Timucua speakers practiced several different cultural traditions. The people suffered severely from the introduction of Eurasian infectious diseases, to which they had no immunity. By 1595, their population was estimated to have been reduced from 200,000 to 50,000 and thirteen chiefdoms remained. They are now extinct as a tribe.

Saturiwa was chief of the Saturiwa tribe, a Timucua chiefdom centered at the mouth of the St. Johns River in Florida, during the 16th century. His main village, also known as Saturiwa, was located on the south bank of the river near its mouth, and according to French sources he was sovereign over thirty other village chiefs. Chief Saturiwa was a prominent figure in the early days of European settlement in Florida, forging friendly relations with the French Huguenot settlers, who founded Fort Caroline in his territory.

Dawn of Man[]

"The swamps are once again fertile, Saturiwa, Timucua chief and sovereign over thirty other villages and their chiefs. Your people are the peoples of Florida, defined by a relationships with the owls, the alligators, and the sharks. It was conflict of these resources that brought you into grudges with other Timucuan villages. But now is not the time to hold those grudges. Exploited by the French and Spanish, it was these grudges that left you divided, and led to your people’s destruction. Resurrected, you now have a chance to right that wrong, to fight for your people against the injustice. Reclaim the swamps and woods of Florida, for they are your rightful land. Brew your black drink and ready a hunt against the alligators, manatees, and whales. Stand your ground for your land and unite the Timucua under your banner. The omens tell of good fortune, as the owls have pitied you.
