The Selkups under Vonya are a custom civilization mod by Senshi, Arilasqueto, and PorkBean with contributions from Zharques, Lungora, and hangman.
This mod requires Brave New World.
Overview[]
The Selkups[]
The Selkups are a Samoyedic speaking Uralic ethnic group native to Siberia. Known as the Ostyak-Samoyeds until the 1930s, they live in the northern parts of Tomsk Oblast, Krasnoyarsk Krai and Tyumen Oblast and Speak the Selkup language. The Selkups consist of two main groups, the Northern and the Southern. The Selkups traditionally engaged in hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding as subsistence. The confederation of Selkup and Ket tribes in the Ob and Tom river basins which existed in the 16th century was known as the Piebald Horde.
Vonya[]
Vonya was the prince of Upper Narym Selkups, part of the Piebald Horde, at the end of the 16th Century. He resisted the encroaching Tsardom of Russia, refusing to pay the yasak tribute, allying with Kuchum Khan of the Sibir Khanate
Vonya was the prince of Upper Narym Selkups. The Lower Narym Selkups were led by prince Kichey, and together they had a favourable relationship. His granddaughter was married to Vonya's son, Taybokhta. Vonya had been exceedingly stubborn with the expanding Tsardom of Russia, refusing to pay the yasak tribute, going as far as to invite Khan Kuchum of the Sibir Khanate and entered into an alliance together. After the defeat of Sibir, Vonya continued to battle the Russians and refused to pay the yasak.
Only after the building of the Narym fortress in 1596, along with the capture of Vonya's son, Urhnk, did Vonya reluctantly paid yasak to the Russian associates at Surgut, though after a while he threatened to attack Surgut altogether. With assistance from allied Ugrian principalities, the Piebald Horde was conquered by Russia shortly after the agreement and the establishment of two forts in Narym in 1598 and Ket in 1602, at the request of Surgut voivoide Osip Pleshcheyev. Even with their history of disobedience, the Piebald princes didn't immediately lose their relevance; Vonya, killed by an unknown cause in 1602, would be succeeded by his son Taibokhta, and Kichey by his son Vagai.
Dawn of Man[]
"Fish for food and fight for freedom, oh Prince Vonya of the Selkups. As the encroaching Russian menace grew closer and closer to your land, you refused to bow the knee and pay the yasak, allying with others such as Kuchum Khan to protect your land and your people. Your people are people of the forest, river, and swamp, and lived in small communities. But only after the Russians built the Narym fortress in 1596 and the capture of your son, Urhnk, did you pay homage to the Tsar of Russia, Feodor I. But your people persisted, and their traditional ways continue, if modified, to this day.
Oh relentless Vonya, you have been called once again to protect your people and their way of life. After decades of cultural oppression, your people are few in number, and struggle to carry forward and teach their ways to the next generations. But you have a choice, to stand against all who oppose you, and etch your name into the annals of history? Can you fortify your traditions and protect your people? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"
Introduction: "I am Vonya, Prince of the Narym and leader of the Skewbald Horde. Respect our way of life, and we will respect yours."
Defeat: "We are defeated, but not destroyed. Leave us now to fish in peace."
