Overview[]
The Qajars[]
The Qajar Dynasty ruled Persia, or the Sublime State of Persia as they styled themselves, predominantly during the 19th Century. They ruled continuously from 1789, when Agha Mohammad Khan usurped the Ashfarid Empire; to 1925, when Reza Pahlavi overthrew the final Qajar Shah and established his own dynasty, the final line of Shahs.
Naser al-Din[]
Naser al-Din was one of the most successful of the Qajar Shahs, but his rule was unfortunately far from perfect. He promoted modernisation in the empire through the appointment of Amir Kabir as his Prime Minister, and tried to protect Persia by playing the Russians and British off against each other during the Great Game. He also made use of royal tours through Europe to improve relations and to inspire Persia's future. However, his attempt to conquer Herat from the British failed, and resulted in a resounding defeat. In addition, his eagerness for reform weakened with age, and he became more unpopular. His assassination in 1896 led to an increase in discontent against the Shahdom, and the actions of his successors led to the fall of the dynasty.

The sun radiates from behind you Naser al-Din, lion of Persia. You were the last great Shah of the Qajar Dynasty, who brought modernisation and reform to your country. You endeavoured to raise Persia to the height of the great powers around her, and although your military endeavours were unsuccessful you were able to maintain Persia as a regional power until you were assassinated during prayer.
