Overview[]

The Onondaga[]

Onondaga, self-name Onoñda’gega’ (“People of the Hills”), tribe of Iroquoian-speaking North American Indians who lived in what is now the U.S. state of New York. The Onondaga traditionally inhabited villages of wood and bark longhouses occupied by related families. They moved these houses periodically to plant new fields, to seek fresh supplies of firewood, and to be nearer fish and game. They grew corn (maize), beans, squash, sunflowers, and tobacco. A council of adult males in each community guided the village chiefs.

The Onondaga tribe, one of the five original nations of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy, was the political and geographical centre of the league. With 14 seats in the council, the Onondaga furnished the chairman and the archivist, who kept the records of transactions in wampum belts.

In the 18th century a sizable faction of Onondaga favouring the French interest migrated to Jesuit mission settlements along the St. Lawrence River. Another faction remained loyal to the British, and, upon the breakup of the Iroquois Confederacy after the American Revolution, a small party followed other members to Grand River in what is now Ontario. The majority, however, remained in their ancestral valley.

Tadodaho[]

Tadodaho was said to be a warrior and primary chief of the Onondaga people. Depending on the speaker's dialect and the writer's orthography, other versions of the name include Adodarhoh, Atartaho, Atotarho, Tatotarho, Thatotarho, and Watatohtahro. In the 1883 work The Iroquois Book of Rites, edited by Horatio Hale, the term Atartaho is said to signify "entangled". In 1889, J. N. B. Hewitt recounted an Iroquois tale which refers to Tadodaho as a "misshapen monster". Jean Houston and Margaret Rubin write in Manual for the Peacemaker that Tadodaho had "matted and spiky hair", and that this visage lent itself to legends that he had snakes in his hair. He is said to have had a "twisted body" and could kill his enemies from a distance without seeing them. Tadodaho ruled with fear, and his people believed him to be a sorcerer. He scared his own people and threatened other peoples, including the Seneca and Cayuga nations. Tadodaho successfully led his Onondaga in raids against the nearby Cayuga people and traveled west, and attacked the Seneca people.

Dawn of Man[]

The People of the Longhouse greet you with undying respect, great Tadodaho. It is said that first you ruled your lands with fear, as those around the hills believed you as powerful as a sorceror. Yet you only saught to keep your people strong against all opponents, and you showed your neighbors the Onondaga are not to be trifled with. Raiding the nearby Cayuga and Seneca encampments, your actions caught the attention of Deganawidah and Hiawatha, as both ventured to seek peace. It is said that only when Jigonhsasee, other of Nations, combed the snakes of your head would you agree to this new alliance. But you know well that peace must be fought for, and as the Onondaga accepted the new law of Peace, they were given a central spot thanks to your power and tenacity. Indeed your legacy is remembered through the ages, as new Tadodahos rise in the hills remembering the Tree of Peace that was placed in your lands.
