Overview[]

The Murrinh-Patha[]

The Murrinh-Patha, or Murinbata, are an Australian Aboriginal culture centered around the Northern Territory of Australia, near Wadeye. Their traditional territory covers over 2,100 kilometers, and their language serves as a lingua franca for other nearby groups. Cultural analysis by W.E.H. Stanner provides the bulk of the information we know about these people, but they're still a presence in Australian society today, and hopefully they will continue to be ever-present. Additionally, their religious beliefs are well-documented, and provides fascinating insight into the lives of not just the Murrinh-Patha, but similar groups as well.

Nemarluk[]

Nemarluk's early life is scarcely documented. He was born somewhere near modern Wadeye (formerly Port Keats) and may have lived in a mission site known as Werntek Nganaiyi. A tall, fierce warrior, he and his warriors wore red to distinguish themselves, thus becoming known as the Red Band. It was in 1933 that his band of soldiers killed the crew of the Japanese ship, Ouida, after tensions rose over a dispute, the subject of which varies but generally centers around the Japanese abuse of Murrinh-Patha women. After being arrested for this attack, Nemarluk escaped through 8 kilometers of crocodile-infested waters. From there, the rest of his life is mostly legend- the writer Ion Idriess wrote about his escapades with the Australian government. He died in 1940 after a period of illness.

Dawn of Man[]

May your people find security under your guardianship, oh brave Nemarluk of the Murrinh-Patha! It was in the 20th century that interlopers thought they could take advantage of the Murrinh-Patha- but you, and your fierce Red Band of Warriors, showed them! Perhaps the most famous tale was your daring escape from Darwin's Fannie Bay Gaol, when you boldly ventured through crocodile infested waters after your capture by colonial forces. Always on the run, you died in your youth, but your people remember your heroic tale.

Oh, strong warrior Nemarluk, your people are in troubled times once more! It is up to you to guard your homelands where time could not. Will you pick up your spear, and run into combat? Will you stand before the enemy like a tower? Will you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: Very well, I suppose we can make room for visitors this time. I am Nemarluk of the Murrinh-Patha. If you've read anything about me- do me a favor and forget about that.

Introduction: Don't be alarmed, this spear's not for guests. My name's Nemarluk. I'm not known for my hospitality, but I'll make an exception this time.

Defeat: What?! This can't be... These lands have always been home to the Murrinh-Patha. Very well, trickster- may you hope that your deeds don't come back to haunt you.
