The Modoc[]

The Modoc are a Native American people who originally lived in the area which is now northeastern California and central Southern Oregon. They are currently divided between Oregon and Oklahoma and are enrolled in either of two federally recognized tribes, the Klamath Tribes in Oregon and the Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma, now known as the Modoc Nation. Estimates of the pre-Contact Modoc varied from 400 to 600. Until the 19th century, when European explorers first encountered the Modoc, like all Plateau Indians, they caught salmon during salmon runs and migrated seasonally to hunt and gather other food. In winter, they built earthen dugout lodges shaped like beehives, covered with sticks and plastered with mud, near lake shores with reliable sources of seeds from aquatic wokas plants and fishing, known today as pit houses. They neighbored the Klamath, Rogue River Athabaskans, Takelma, Northern Paiute, Karuk, Yurok, and Achomawi.

Kintpuash, also known as Captain Jack, was a chief of the Modoc tribe of California and Oregon, born in 1837 and dying on October 3, 1873. His name meaning ‘Strikes the water brashly’ in the Modoc language, he led a band from the Klamath Reservation to return to their lands in California, where they resisted return. From 1872 to 1873, their small force made use of the lava beds, holding off more numerous United States Army forces for months in the Modoc War. Kintpuash was the only Native American leader ever to be charged with war crimes, and he was executed by the Army, along with several followers, for their ambush killings of General Edward Canby and Reverend Eleazar Thomas at a peace commission meeting.

Dawn of Man[]

"Let the strength of your ancestors’ flow through you, oh Kintpuash, Chief of the Modoc people, famously known as Captain Jack. As a young man, the American colonizers forced you into a reservation with your tribal enemies, the Klamath, who treated you poorly. After only a year, you decisively lead a band of your people from the reservation back to your homeland. This was not easy, as you were forced back onto the reservation by the United States Army. But your tenacious nature did not allow you to take such a loss standing, and you left again. This time, you led your people to war, using the lava beds and trenches of your new hideout for defensive warfare. You hoped for a peaceful solution that would allow your people to stay in your territory, but it was not to be. You were shamed for entering into negotiations, and instead planned an ambush. Killing a U.S. General, you were forced back to fighting, but, after your surrender, you were tried and convicted to hang.

Oh brave Kintpuash, do not repeat the same mistakes. You can use peace, you can use war. The time has come to free your people. Will you carve out territory for your people? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I am but one man. I am the voice of my people. Whatever their hearts feel, I talk."

Defeat: "I am not afraid to die. I will not fall on the rocks. When I die, my enemies will be under me!"
