Overview[]
The Métis[]
The Métis are a recognized indigenous group of Canada with descent from various different tribes, in combination with European fur traders or similar. While the Métis have largely developed a unified status, the culture is anything but- Métis largely inherit different aspects of their different ancestries. There are aspects of Métis culture that have since developed, however, as being a unique combination of traditional indigenous and European culture. Politically, there isn't a definition of Métis except in the province of Alberta- however, over 390,000 people self-identify as Métis.
Louis Riel[]
Louis Riel, born in 1844 of Franco-Chipewyan descent, was an ill-tempered youth. He began schooling at age 7, and was initially intending to become a priest- however, upon his father's death, he left his studies. Riel had numerous issues with his mental health- however, he had also proven to be an exceptional orator and proven leader. During the Red River resistance, he noticed the rising racial and religious tensions of the Métis. He became secretary of a group known as the National Committee of the Métis. During this time, he led a group of Métis to seize Fort Garry, a Hudson's Bay Company trading post. Riel quickly garnered more and more power afterwards. The following political victory of the rebellion led to the creation of the province of Manitoba and greater rights for the Métis. However, Louis Riel was exiled from Canada after he learned that the Canadian colonial militia intended to lynch him.
After a period of exile in Montana, in the western United States, Louis Riel returned following a message from a delegation. The head of the delegation, Gabriel Dumont, had known Riel during their time in Manitoba. He was initially well-received for his moderation, although Plains Cree leaders Big Bear and Poundmaker found fault with the Métis settlers. Riel began to show signs of a return to his mental instability, and began fervent prayer- which, ironically, led to a deterioration with the Catholic clergy. The Métis petitioned the Canadian government for direct negotiations, but the Canadian response was seen as a deflection. Riel began to foster the Métis people to arms, believing that he was a messianic figure and declaring that "Rome has fallen." Riel formed the provisonal government of Saskatchewan, with himself as political and religious leader, and Gabriel Dumont as military leader. There was some initial success under Dumont's military leadership, however, Riel centered his forces around Batoche- which led to a decisive Métis defeat at the Battle of Batoche. Louis Riel was then trialed in what was largely considered and unjust case, and then executed via hanging.
Dawn of Man[]
May your worship be true, Louis Riel! You led the Métis during the Northwest rebellion. Your efforts to create a state for your varied peoples bore fruit, in the creation of the province of Manitoba- however, your legacy is still divided amongst the Canadian people. Some view you as a heretic, but your followers still believe in your just cause.
Oh, great Riel! Your people are one without borders, but not without heart. Can you lead your flock to greater pastures? Can you find the finest game the plains of this world have to offer? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
