Overview[]

The Māori[]

The Maori are the group of indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand (which they called Aotearoa, or the Land of the Long White Cloud). The Maori have settled on New Zealand for nearly three quarters of a millenium, in their isolation they created their own culture and society. The early Maoris formed tribes - influenced from their earlier Polynesian societies, horticulture began to thrive from the importation of flora, and the infamous warrior culture rose into prominence. The arrival of the British in the 17th century set about great change in every aspect of Maori life, initially the Maori adopted and accepted European culture and the two coexisted peacefully. Tensions over the sale of land however led to conflict by the 1860s; social upheaval, battles and foreign epidemics struck the Maori population and caused their numbers to dindle before a recovery in the 20th century.

Te Kooti[]

Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki was a Maori leader, the founder of the Ringatu religion and guerrilla fighter. While fighting alongside government forces against the Hauhau in 1865, he was accused of spying. Exiled to the Chatham Islands without trial along with captured Hauhau, he experienced visions and became a religious leader. In 1868 he led the escape of 168 prisoners, seizing the schooner Rifleman and sailing back to the North Island where he began a series of raids. A resultant military reprisal campaign became known as Te Kooti's War. He was pardoned in 1883 but continued to be active in spreading the Ringatu message of peace and reclaiming land from Pakeha.

Dawn of Man[]

Blessings be upon you, Te Kooti, founder of the Ringatu faith. Your visions following an unjust exile to the Chatham Islands heralded the start of a new religious era for your people - a syncretic one, uniting the religions of old with the new faith of the Pakeha. After a daring escape, you led your followers to a new land, fighting a vengeful and bloody guerrilla war against the colonial forces who had taken the lands of your people. Your religious lore was oral, involving riddles and challenges, but the mission of you and your followers was nonetheless clear. Under your command, your followers waged a vast war against the colonial oppressors, striking at the heart of their lands. Your name was known wide, feared and respected by frend and foe alike. Though you did not succeed in vanquishing the British presence, you were able to continue preaching your faith across the land, retiring to Tokangamutu and devoting the rest of your life to the Ringatu faith.

MC TeKooti Leaderscene

Pious Te Kooti, the time has come to return to your followers and take up arms once more. You are a celebrated prophet and martyr, and your people need your guidance to show the way once more. But much has changed, and you must adapt with the time if you are to truly spread the word. Can you lead both the Maori and the Ringatu Church to glory and piety? Will you build a civilisation that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: "May my warmth strike to your deepest emotions as I welcome you to my realm. I am Te Kooti, prophet of the Ringatu faith."

Defeat: "How great is my worry, and my anxiety, of the great changes which will harm the mana of my people."
