Overview[]
The Māori[]
The Māori are the group of indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand (which they called Aotearoa, or the Land of the Long White Cloud). The Māori have settled on New Zealand for nearly three quarters of a millenium, in their isolation they created their own culture and society. The early Māoris formed tribes - influenced from their earlier Polynesian societies, horticulture began to thrive from the importation of flora, and the infamous warrior culture rose into prominence. The arrival of the British in the 17th century set about great change in every aspect of Māori life, initially the Māori adopted and accepted European culture and the two coexisted peacefully. Tensions over the sale of land however led to conflict by the 1860s; social upheaval, battles and foreign epidemics struck the Māori population and caused their numbers to dindle before a recovery in the 20th century.
Potatau Te Wherowhero[]
Te Wherowhero was born in Waikato towards the end of the eighteenth century. He was the eldest son of a Waikato warrior chief, Te Rauangaanga, and Parengaope of Ngati Koura. He belonged to the senior chiefly line of Ngati Mahuta, and was descended from the captains of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes. Te Wherowhero had four wives, Whakaawi, Raharaha, Waiata and Ngawaero. His children were Matutaera (later known as Tawhiao), Makareta Te Otaota and Tiria.
Te Wherowhero grew up in the period of peace that followed the great victory of Waikato over Ngati Toa in the battle called Hingakaka, at Te Mangeo, near Lake Ngaroto. He was taught traditional lore by his father and later learned sacred knowledge at Te Papa-o-Rotu, the Waikato whare wananga at Whatawhata. He also trained as a warrior, and when his relative Te Uira was killed by Ngati Toa, he took part in warfare against them. He is said to have instigated the killing of Marore, a wife of Te Rauparaha, while she was visiting relatives in Waikato about 1820. After revenge killings by Ngati Toa, an army of Waikato and Ngati Maniapoto warriors invaded Kawhia in 1820, and defeated Ngati Toa at Te Kakara, near Lake Taharoa, and Waikawau, south of Tirua Point. Te Rauparaha was then besieged at Te Arawi, near Kawhia Harbour, and after negotiations it was agreed that Ngati Toa should cede their lands to Waikato and depart for the south. They were allowed to leave and at first went to Te Kaweka, in northern Taranaki.
Dawn of Man[]
Long life and strong spirit to you, Potatau Te Wherowhero, first king of the Māori people. Born to the chiefly line of Ngati Mahuta in Waikato, you would come to prove yourself as both a capable warrior and leader. As disputes over lands with the New Zealand government became increasingly protracted, the need for a strong and united Maori leadership became paramount. It was here that you rose to the cause of the Kingiitanga movement, accepting kingship in the name of the sovereignty of the Māori people and establishing the Te Wherowhero Dynasty that continues to work for the cause of the Māori people to this day.
O' descendent of chiefs great and honourable, he who is both fearsome and wise, your people once again look to you for leadership; to counterbalance those who would call themselves sovereign. Can you take up the Māori kingship once more and hold in trust the protection of Māori lands? Can you repel the would-be colonizers from dispossessing Māori culture? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
Introduction: "Kia ora, traveller. I am Potatau Te Wherowhero, King of the Māori people. May you share in the peace we have made for ourselves. If not, then yours will be a short life."
Defeat: "Whiro-te-tipua take you to the darkest pits of Taiwhetuki."
