Overview[]
The Lusitanians[]
The Lusitanians (or Latin: Lusitani) were an Indo-European people living in the west of the Iberian Peninsula prior the conquest by the Roman Republic. It is uncertain to what extent the Lusitani were Celticized, though they may have been related to the Celtic Lusones of northeastern Iberia. They first clashed with the Romans in 194 BC and joined the Celtiberians in a war against the Roman presence that lasted until 179 BC. War broke out again in 153 BC, and under the leadership of Viriathus, an excellent strategist who managed to unite many Celtiberian tribes against the Romans, the Lusitani inflicted a series of defeats (c. 147–c. 139) on Roman troops from their military camp on the Hill of Venus (Sierra S. Vincente in Spain). After Viriathus was assassinated by his aides at Roman instigation, the Lusitanians were subdued. The name Lusitania was given to a Roman province later established (27 BC) in central Portugal.
Viriathus[]
Viriathus was the leader of the Lusitani in their war with Rome. In 150 Viriathus escaped the Roman massacre and enslavement of Lusitani who had surrendered peacefully. Viriathus continued to fight in the resistance and rose to become the leader of the tribesmen. From 147 to 142 BCE, Viriathus won one victory after another against the Romans. However, Viriathus was unable to match Rome's vast resources and became worn down by attrition. In 139 BCE Viriathus renewed peace negotiations but was betrayed and murdered by close friends. One of Rome's most successful and charismatic foes, Viriathus became Portugal's first national hero.
Dawn of Man[]
Welcome Viriathus, fierce and brave leader of the Lusitanian tribes. With your guidance and limitless courage, your people rose against the ever-expanding Roman Empire, claiming victory after victory in protection of your rightful homeland. With a hatred born from bearing witness to a gruesome massacre where thousands of your countrymen was slaughtered by a Roman Army after having been promised safety, you gathered the Lusitanian and neighbouring tribes and went on a campaign that lasted for ten years and saw the death of at least 3 roman commanders by your hand.
