The Lenca[]
The Lenca are an indigenous people of El Salvador and Honduras, calling themselves Lenca Wiran, which roughly translate to “Jaguar People”, besides been divided in different Lenca tribes, the two main group of Lenca are the Potón and Kotik, each referring to the Lenca of El Salvador and Honduras respectively.
Lempira[]
Not much is known about Lempira's reign before the Spanish Colonization, he is first commissioned by the Senior chief of Cerquín,Entenpica to mobilize their people against other Lenca chiefdoms. In 1537, Lempira started a military campaing against other Lenca polities; with the arrival of the Spanish in that same year, Lempira and his former rivals reorganized their conflict toward the oncoming Spaniard legions.
At the high of his short lived uprising, Lempira was able to lead around 300,000 warriors from different Lenca villages, polities and chiefdoms into the campaign against the Spanish. Through his uprising, Lempira and other Lenc rebels used hill forts and mountains as their based of operation, giving them a big advantage against their enemies. But even with all of these efforts, Lempira's death would come that same year, the cause and circumstances of his death are contested between two narratives;the first one been the Antonio de Herrera y Tordesilla’s account, where Lempira is betrayed and killed by Spaniard with an arquebusier during a peace treaty and the Rodrigo Ruiz account, where he claims to be perpuator of Lempira’s death through an ambush.
