The Kumeyaay[]

The Kumeyaay, also known as Tipai-Ipai or by their historical Spanish name Diegueno, are a tribe of Indigenous peoples of the Americas who live at the northern border of Baja California in Mexico and the southern border of California in the United States. Their Kumeyaay language belongs to the Yuman–Cochimi language family. The Kumeyaay consist of three related groups, the Ipai, Tipai and Kamia. The San Diego River loosely divided the Ipai and the Tipai historical homelands, while the Kamia lived in the eastern desert areas. The Ipai lived to the north, from Escondido to Lake Henshaw, while the Tipai lived to the south, in lands including the Laguna Mountains, Ensenada, and Tecate. The Kamia lived to the east in an area that included Mexicali and bordered the Salton Sea. The term Kumeyaay translates as Those who face the water from a cliff, with the word meyaay meaning steep or cliff.

Chisli was a Kumeyaay rebel leader, and the Kwaaypaay at Nipaguay. After supposedly stealing fish from a small group of elderly, unbaptized Kumeyaay women, Chisli became a rebel leader and outlaw. After attacking a mission compound and being on the run from Spanish authorities, he handed himself in, taking shelter in a church. This proved to be fortuitous, as it prevented harsh retribution against him. After enduring prison, he was baptised and confirmed.

Dawn of Man[]

"Hail, Chisli, Kumeyaay rebel leader and Kwaaypaay at Nipaguay. A figure shrouded in mystery, you were accused of theft and hunted, putting you to flight. You dodged Spanish authorities for over half a year, terrorising mission compounds in retribution for your people and evading the Spanish pursuing you. But your people suffered because of this, punished for your rebelliousness, which led you to turning yourself in for the good of your people. You did this in a church, hoping to shelter from the military, which led to excommunications as the military violated canonical law in extracting you. In prison, you turned to faith, becoming both baptised and confirmed. A character of mystery, your impact upon recorded history ended here.

Shrewd Chisli, your people once again call for resistance to take back their sovereignty. This is a chance for you to make an even greater dent in history! They call for a defiant and cunning leader such as yourself to stand, once again, aligned against the colonisers, and to push back to reclaim your heritage. Will you rebuild the ‘eewa and domesticate mockingbirds and roadrunners on your way to glory? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Welcome to the land of the Kumeyaay. I am Chisli, leader of my people."

Defeat: "You may have defeated me, but my people will never have their spirits broken."
