Overview

The Kipchaks

The Kipchaks, also known as Kipchak Turks or Polovtsians, were Turkic nomads who formed a confederation that existed in the Middle Ages, inhabiting parts of the Eurasian Steppe. First mentioned in the eighth century as part of the Second Turkic Khaganate, they most likely inhabited the Altai region from where they expanded over the following centuries, first as part of the Kimek–Kipchak confederation and later as part of a confederation with the Cumans. There were groups of Kipchaks in the Pontic–Caspian steppe, China, Syr Darya and Siberia. Cumania was conquered by the Mongol Empire in the early 13th century.

Togortak

Togortak, also known as Tugorkhan, was a Kipchak khan known for his alliance with Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos. Together with fellow khan Bonyak, he united under his authority several Western Kipchak hordes.

Fare thee well, Togortak, Khan of the western Kipchaks! Your people were a mighty one, and quite well-traveled, spanning from the edge of Siberia to the Pontic Steppe where you claimed your glory. Through your efforts, alongside those of your fellow Khan Bonyak, you brought many of the Cuman and Kipchak hordes under your command. When the ancient Byzantine Empire called for aid, you answered, and you even managed to defeat the mighty Principality of Kiev in battle. Though you may have eventually been slain in battle, your impact on the various states of eastern Europe certainly cannot be forgotten.

Mighty Togortak, your people are on the move once more, and now they find themselves in an unfamiliar land beset by enemies. It falls to you to unite the Kipchak hordes under your banner and lead them wherever they must go. Will you terrorize the steppes and destroy your enemies? Or will you perhaps use diplomacy to forge a mighty alliance? Will you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
