Overview[]

The Kazakh Khanate[]

The Kazakh Khanate was a Kazakh state in Central Asia, successor of the Golden Horde existing from the 15th to 19th century, centered on the eastern parts of the Desht-i Qipchaq. It was established in 1465 by Janibek Khan and Kerei Khan, scions of the Turco-Mongol Tore clan, which traced its lineage to Genghis Khan through the Jochids. This clan continued to rule the khanate until its fall to the Russian Empire.

From 16th to 17th century, the Kazakh Khanate ruled and expanded its territories to eastern Cumania (modern-day West Kazakhstan), to most of Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan and the Syr Darya river, and marched armies as far as Astrakhan and Khorasan Province, which are now in Russia and Iran, respectively. The Khanate was later weakened by a series of Oirat and Dzungar invasions. These resulted in a decline and further disintegration into three Juzes, which gradually lost their sovereignty and were incorporated to the expanding Russian Empire in the 19th century.

Ablai Khan[]

Wali-ullah Abu'l-Mansur Khan, better known as Ablai Khan was a Kazakh khan of the Middle zhuz, or central region, of the Kazakh Khanate. He was able to unite the khanate's three zhuzes, and secured his realm's independence by playing the major powers of China and Russia against each other.

In his teenage years, Abulmansur developed the nickname "Ablai", which he was more commonly known by for most of his adult life. In the first half of the 18th century, Ablai Khan proved to be a talented organizer and commander as he headed detachments of the Kazakh militia during the Kazakh-Dzungar Wars. He participated in the most significant battles against the Dzungars from the 1720s to the 1750s, for which he was declared a "batyr" ("hero") by the people. Due to his strength, he was also bestowed with the honorific Kazakh title Shah-i-Turan (Persian for "King of Turan"). He was the last ruler of the Kazakh Khanate to hold this honorific title since the khanate collapsed shortly after his death.

Ablai's activity aimed to create a strong and independent Kazakh state. He headed the unified forces of the Kazakhs and furthered the centralization of state power in Kazakhstan.

Until his election as the khan of the three zhuzes, Ablai had to compete with Abul-Mambet Khan and his descendants of Middle zhuz for leadership. Initially, Russia recognized Abul-Mambet Khan as the Khan of Middle zhuz, while Ablai was supported by China. Ablai's talent in playing China against Russia gradually made him the unrivaled Khan of the steppe.

Unlike Abul Khair Khan of the little zhuz, Ablai never submitted to Russian rule. In 1771, at the meeting of the representatives of the three zhuzes, Ablai was elected as the Kazakh khan. Empress Catherine II of Russia requested that the title of khan should be recognized and officially approved by Russia. To that end, she sent an official letter to Petropavl, where Ablai was expected to receive the title in 1779. He never showed up at the fort, declining Russia's request to appoint him as the khan of Middle zhuz.

In contrast to Ablai, other khans and sultans had been competing for the lavish gifts and stipends of the Emperors of Russia in return for their submission. Ablai Khan refused to bow down to the expanding Russian Empire and instead chose to strengthen the Kazakhs by promoting Islam and the concept of jihad throughout the state as an effort to resist foreign powers.

Dawn of Man[]

"We greet you, most illustrious Ablai Khan; long may you reign beneath the eternal blue sky! You lead the ferocious and industrious Kazakh people, united under one banner by your ancestor Janybek Khan. Though born of low estate as a beggar and a herdsman's son, your royal pedigree could not be hidden for long: you seized the reins of power from numerous upstart uncles, and afterwards steered the Kazakh hordes into unity and prosperity. Through your military prowess, you earned the title of 'hero' among the Kazakhs; through your wisdom, you reunited the disparate Kazakh zhuzes; through your cunning, you were able to withstand the might of both the Russian and Chinese empires. Truly you are worthy of remembrance as the father of the Kazakh nation!

Introduction: "I am Ablai Khan, herdsman of the mighty Kazakh people. You are not one of us, yet stomp around our land as if you were; explain your presence here, and quickly!"

Defeat: "My God, how have I sinned, that you return me to the beggar I once was?"
