Overview[]

The Kassites[]

The Kassites were people of the ancient Near East who controlled Babylonia after the fall of the Old Babylonian Empire c. 1531 BC and until c. 1155 BC. They gained control of Babylonia after the Hittite sack of the city in 1595 BC (i.e. 1531 BC per the short chronology), and established a dynasty based first in Babylon and later in Dur-Kurigalzu. The Kassites were members of a small military aristocracy but were efficient rulers and not locally unpopular, and their 500-year reign laid an essential groundwork for the development of subsequent Babylonian culture. The chariot and the horse, which the Kassites worshipped, first came into use in Babylonia at this time.

Kurigalzu I[]

Kurigalzu I was the 17th king of the Kassite dynasty that ruled over Babylon, and was responsible for one of the most extensive and widespread building programs for which evidence has survived in Babylonia.

Dawn of Man[]

"Blessings of Shuqamuna and Shumalia be upon you, O Kurigalzu I, King of Babylon and of the Kassites! The Kassites are an ancient people, who came to power in Babylon after its spoliation by the Hittites. Conquering what had once been the lands of the Sumerians, the Kassites brought together Babylonia's scattered city-states, and bound them together to form a strong, prosperous empire not seen since the days of godlike Hammurabi. With your diplomatic acumen and strength of arms, you would restore fair Babylon's place of pride among the nations with diplomacy and conquest, keeping her whole for centuries to come.

Exalted Kurigalzu, he who restored Anu to his divine sanctuary, your dynasty and your legacy are once more called on by gods and men to rule and to conquer. O how they long to see Karduniash's walls to rise once more! Will your chariots descend from the Zagros into fertile Mesopotamia once more? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I am Kurigalzu, shepherd of the Kassite people and king over the lands before you. Tell me, from which corner of the earth do you hail?"

Defeat: "In one swift stroke, my flocks have been scattered. May the gods be merciful in their judgment of my reign."
