Overview[]

The Ikko-ikki[]

The Ikko-ikki, meaning "Single-Minded Uprising" or "Single-Minded League", were loosely organized rebellious groups that emerged in Japan during the 15th and 16th centuries. Primarily followers of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism, Ikko-ikki were formed by peasants, priests, farmers and lesser warlord who opposed the rule of Daimyo and sought greater autonomy for their communities. By the time of the Sengoku Jidai the Ikko-ikki had become extremely powerful, with almost total control over Kaga Province and centered in Osaka at their temple fortress, the Ishiyama Hongan-ji.

Kennyo[]

Hongan-ji Kennyo, also known as Kosa, was the 11th Monshu (Head Abbot) of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. Unlike his predecessor, Rennyo, Kennyo did not preach pacifism and actively encouraged Ikko groups to rise up in support of the Hongan-ji's ambitions. A relative of Takeda Shingen through marriage, he organized Ikko-ikki incursions from Kaga Province into the territory of Takeda's rival, Uesugi Kenshin. Kennyo led the defense of Ishiyama Hongan-ji while it was under siege by Oda Nobunaga, who spent a decade attempting to crush the rebellious priests.

Dawn of Man[]

Advance towards salvation, Hongan-ji Kennyo, 11th Monshu of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist sect. You are the closest thing to an authority over the Ikko-ikki, the various uprisings and rebellions that spread across Japan during the Sengoku Jidai. Among your ranks are peasants, farmers, warrior monks, lesser samurai - people from all walks of life find peace and solace in your teachings. From your fortress at Ishiyama, you withstood the conquests of Oda Nobunaga for a full decade while under the longest siege in Japanese history.

Strategy[]

Ikko-Ikki

The Ikko-ikki are an appropriately militaristic and religious Civilization, with a distinct bend towards a Domination victory. The first part of their Unique Ability, Namu Amida Butsu, is quite rare to fire and has some prerequisite conditions. It may only trigger once per City, until that City changes ownership, and may not steal tiles that are directly adjacent to the City itself. Additionally, it may not trigger while an Inquisitor is stationed in the City, giving players some line of defense against this ability. Rival Civilizations unfortunate enough to have a Culture or Faith Unique Improvement, or foolish enough to adopt Dance of the Aurora or Desert Folklore as their Pantheon, should be your main targets for conversion as they will have plenty of Faith and Culture-producing tiles. You can also use this ability to steal away certain Natural Wonders, which grant you a Happiness bonus simply by being within your Empire.

As the Ikko-ikki, adopting a Faith-producing Pantheon and building plenty of Holy Sites is an optimal strategy to take advantage of the UA's second clause. Each point of Faith from worked tiles provides 1% Production towards military units, so a worked Holy Site alone grants a massive 6% increase (10% with the New Deal tenet from the Freedom tree).

The first Unique Unit of the Ikko-ikki is the Sohei, a replacement for the Pikeman. Sohei gain 50% extra strength and ignore terrain costs when beginning a turn stationed on a Tile Improvement in friendly territory. It can also enter the territory of rival Civilizations that follow your Religion without Open Borders. This means that it can access small pockets of territory acquired by the Ikko-ikki Unique Ability. Stationing your Sohei in these territories positions them for a quick, powerful charge attack the moment you declare war.

The second Unique Unit of the Ikko-ikki is the Nomin, a civilian Worker replacement. Nomin generate 2 Faith for the Ikko-ikki each time they complete a tile improvement, and also have a chance to receive a random military Promotion. While of limited use during the unit's life as a civilian, during war the Nomin can be upgraded at a cost of 100 gold into a modern combat Unit for which you have the required Technology. Any Promotion valid for Recon, Melee, Gunpowder, Mounted, or Armored Units can be received by the Nomin, meaning that with some luck you can land some extremely powerful combinations. Start using your Nomin early on to generate a Pantheon and stack Promotions, then when war comes choose your most experienced workers and enlist them as combat units.
