Overview[]

The Haida[]

The Haida people are an indigenous group who have traditionally occupied Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, an archipelago just off the coast of British Columbia, Canada for at least 12,500 years. Currently, according to censuses, there are 4,787 Haida living in Canada and 5,977 Haida living in the United States. In Haida Gwaii, the Haida government consists of a matrix of national and regional hereditary, legislative, and executive bodies including the Hereditary Chiefs Council, the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN), Old Massett Village Council, Skidegate Band Council, and the Secretariat of the Haida Nation.

Koyah[]

Koyah, Haida for Raven, was the chief of Ninstints or Skungwai, the main village of the Kunghit-Haida during the era of the Maritime Fur Trade, who was known to be active from 1787 to 1795. His tribe was located on the Haida Gwaii, or the Queen Charlotte Islands, off the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Koyah was involved in more conflicts with ship captains than any other chief of his period and figures prominently in histories of the fur trade and coastal exploration.

Dawn of Man[]

The Ravens Cry for you, oh fierce Koyah of the Haida, for your people seek your might. A brave warrior, when the fur traders came, you were at first friendly, successfully trading with the Europeans. But after a few trades, the relationship with these outsiders soured, and what was once a successful mutual relationship became the source of bitter conflict. You led your people to clash with the Europeans, leading your fellow chiefs to seize foreign ships foolish enough to dare encroaching on your realm - cementing your brave and adventurous spirit to the annals of history.

Brace Koyah, for the storm for your survival is coming. Stiffen your resolve, and once again take up the mantle of Chief of your people to take back your land, to capture the ships of the enemies to show that your people will not be defeated, that your legacy will not be defined by their unsophisticated interpretations of your culture. Take arms! Will you help your people to define a new, true legacy of their culture? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Kíl 'láa. Welcome to Haida Gwaii. I am Koyah, chief of the Haida. I trust you will bring no trouble."
