Merovingian Franks[]

The Merovingian dynasty was the family that ruled over the Franks from the fifth through eighth centuries. The dynasty is named after its founding king, Merovech, who came to power around 450 AD. The 7th-century Chronicle of Fredegar also asserts that Merovech was fathered by a quinotaur - a mythical half-bull, half-fish creature - but otherwise, the Merovingians made no claim to divine descent.

Initially, the Merovingians only ruled over the Salian Franks, but Clovis I - Merovech's grandson - would go on to unite all of the Frankish people into his domain. Clovis was also notable for his conversion to Catholicism, which led many of his subjects to convert in his wake, accelerating the Christianization of Westen Europe. Another of Clovis' legacies was the partition of inheritance: on his deathbed in 511, Clovis divided his realms between his four sons. This precedent of splitting the kingdom would lead to a century of division, but the Franks would ultimately be reunified by Chlothar II in 613. By this point, the Frankish world had codified a standard set of heritable regions: Austrasia, Neustria, Burgundy, and Aquitania.

Chlothar II and his son Dagobert were both powerful kings, but after him, the Merovingian royal power would degrade. Clovis II (r. 639 - 657) was a minor for almost all of his reign, allowing the nobility of the realm to accumulate power. This accumulation peaked thanks to the efforts of Pepin of Herstal, who - after the Battle of Tertry in 687 - was able to establish himself, as Mayor of the Palace, as the de facto ruler of the realm. Pepin's son was Charles Martel, who famously repelled a Moorish invasion at the Battle of Tours in 732; however, Charles was also notable because, in his later years, he ruled without a king above him. Charles' sons would have to step back from this high-water mark of mayoral power, appointing a Merovingian figurehead to curtail revolts in the realm. However, one of these sons - Pepin the Short - would eventually ascend to the kingship himself in 751, thus putting an end to the Merovingian royal line.

Clovis I[]

Clovis I, also known as Clovis the Great, was the third king of the Salian Franks and the first king of the united Frankish realm. He was famed for his military conquests, his codification of the laws, and his adoption of Christianity.

Clovis was born in approximately 466 AD, as the son of Childeric I, then the reigning king of the Salian Franks. However, Childeric died in 481, forcing the teenage Clovis to ascend to kingship himself. At this point, the Franks were divided among numerous small kingdoms, and there was a significant Gallo-Roman presence in the region. However, Clovis was able to break the power of the Gallo-Romans in 486, winning a decisive victory over them at the Battle of Soissons. This ousted the Gallo-Roman commander from power, and effectively doubled Clovis' territory.

Clovis continued his expansion throughout the rest of his reign. At the Battle of Tolbiac in 496, he repelled an invasion from the Alamanni in the east; in 500, Clovis interceded in the Burgundian civil war and made the state into a tributary; and circa 502, he managed to conquer Armorica (modern-day Brittany). His final military conquest came in 507, when he successfully ousted the Visigoths from the Gallic portion of their kingdom. Clovis also buttressed his military conquests with diplomatic alliances. He married his sister to Theoderic, the king of the Ostrogoths; Clovis himself also married Clotilde, the niece of a Burgundian king, in 493. Clotilde was a Catholic, in contrast to the Arianism that was the majority religion among the Franks, and she eventually convinced Clovis to convert as well. On Christmas Day 508, Clovis converted to Catholicism, and he was baptized in Reims.

Clovis was also notable for codifying the Salic Law. This was a code of laws, both civil and criminal, that was influential on numerous Western and Central European law codes that follow it. States that have used Salic-derived laws include the Netherlands, Austria-Hungary, Romania, parts of Italy and Spain, and many German principalities. One of the most notable aspects of Salic law was its use of agnatic succession - the exclusion of women from property inheritance. This was not the only inheritance precedent that Clovis set: on his deathbed in 511, he begun the Merovingian trend of dividing up his realms among his sons.

"Blessings be upon you Clovis I, the first king of the united Franks, founder of the Merovingian dynasty, codifier of laws and New Constantine. As the king of the Salian Franks, you inherited a small petty kingdom at the age of 15. But you did not believe this was adequate. You began to expand your realm through battle and diplomacy, satisfying those who may stand against you by integrating tribes and pleasing the clergy. After defeating the Roman rump of Sossions, you conquered much of the former Gaul, repelled the Alemanni, and, shortly before your death, defeated the Visigoths. Also a pious man, after an interest in Arian Christianity, you converted to Catholicism through your wife’s influence, though not without resistance after the death of a son. On your death, you divided your kingdom amongst your sons and were interred at Paris.

Oh strong Clovis, your kingdom once again has called your name, for she once again needs the mighty hand you provided. Your domain is in discord, bought about by the squabbling of sons for land conquered by their fathers. Can you restore harmony amongst your quarrelling kingdom? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Well met! I am Chlodowig, but men pronounce it "Clovis." I am the man who united the Franks, and the man who will lead them to still greater glories. And you?"

Defeat: "Kill me if you must, but I have made my peace with God. In the kingdom of Heaven, I will be immortal."
