Overview

The Floridas

The Republic of the Floridas was a short-lived attempt, from June to December 1817, to establish an independent Florida comprised of East Florida and West Florida, then Spanish territory. It was led by Gregor MacGregor, a Scottish military adventurer, and he was joined by French adventurer and soldier of fortune Louis-Michel Aury and by the Scot Richard Ambrister, whose execution by General Andrew Jackson shortly thereafter provoked an international incident. MacGregor conquered Amelia Island, the only territory the country consisted of, and raised the Green Cross of Florida flag over the Spanish Fort San Carlos.

Gregor MacGregor

Gregor MacGregor was a Scottish soldier, adventurer, and confidence trickster, known for his plots and ploys in the Americas. From the Clan Gregor, MacGregor was an officer in the British Army from 1803 to 1810; he served in the Peninsular War. He joined the republican side in the Venezuelan War of Independence in 1812, quickly became a general and, over the next four years, operated against the Spanish on behalf of both Venezuela and its neighbour New Granada. His successes included a difficult month-long fighting retreat through northern Venezuela in 1816. He captured Amelia Island in 1817 under a mandate from revolutionary agents to conquer Florida from the Spanish, and there proclaimed a short-lived "Republic of the Floridas". On his return to Britain in 1821, MacGregor claimed that King George Frederic Augustus of the Mosquito Coast in the Gulf of Honduras had created him Cazique of Poyais, which he described as a developed colony with a community of British settlers.

After service in the British and Portuguese armies, you sought glory in the New World, serving the governments of both Venezuela and New Grenada. The Republic of the Floridas was a glorious conquest… except it was a failure. Your personal Caziquedom of Poyais saw hundreds migrate to the new world… only to find that the capital was little more than a pile of rubble, despite the currency and military uniform designs.

Spectacular Gregor MacGregor, you have been entrusted with the task of making the Republic of the Floridas a success. You must forget past failures, you must instead strive to build a legitimate Republic, founded on revolutionary ideals. You must use all your skills, both honorable and underhanded, to build the Republic beyond Amelia Island. It will not be an easy task, but you have the men, the skills, and the equipment. Can you leave the past behind and redeem yourself in the eyes of the old and new worlds? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?
