Overview[]
Coast Salish[]
The Coast Salish occupied much of the American Pacific Northwest and Canadian British Columbia including the modern metropolitan areas of Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria. The Lushootseed language is spoken in the Puget Sound region and is a member of the Southern Coastal Salish language subgroup. Tribes that are believed to have spoken Lushootseed include the Duwamish, the Steilacoom, the Suquamish, the Muckleshoot, the Snoqualmie, the Nisqually, and the Puyallup. While the society of each tribes varies based on their exact area of settlement, fishing was commonly relied upon by these peoples, as they benefitted from the salmon population in the Puget Sound watershed.
The story of the Lushootseed-speaking Salish mirrors that of many other Native American groups during that time period. In 1854, the Treaty of Medicine Creek was signed, forcing the relocation of many native Americans in exchange for their continuing fishing rights. The Puget Sound War, though brief and small in scale, had devastating consequences the sourthern Salish tribes involved. Relatively few people died during the conflict, but Chief Leschi was captured and put on trial for murder, later to be hanged. Today, Salish peoples live in reservations scattered throughout Washington state.
Seattle[]
Si'ahl, or Seattle, was perhaps the most important player in American - Coast Salish relations in the 19th century. He was a chief, but not the principal chief, of the Salish peoples living in what is now the Vancouver and Seattle areas of Canada and the U.S. state of Washington. While Seattle was in no ways a direct authority among his people, he wielded no small degree of influence, and is remembered for causing an end to American-Salish conflict with a famous speech bearing his name. While the events surrounding Seattle's life have been romanticized and distorted for various modern purposes, his legacy has lasted long into the current age.
Dawn of Man[]
Oh wise and generous Seattle, you who saw the signs of the coming age and so equipped your people for the future, blessed are you among men. Your people, the Coast Salish, thrived upon the choicest lands, near Puget Sound in what is now Washington State in America, and on Vancouver Island in Canada. Situated between jealous enemies, your people nontheless managed to thrive and create an advanced society based on distinctive art and architecture and the law of generosity.
When the Americans began to settle in your lands, you held your people back from war and generously offered your lands to the colonists, claiming that the age of the Coast Salish was at its end and the time of the colonist had come. But your era was not at its end. Because of your actions, your people have been resilient to the rigors and suffering of life without their land, and even now, are one of the most powerful and influential First Nations.
Seattle! We look to your decisive and benevolent leadership to set the path for our future. Gaze upon the world and read it like a sign in the heavens. Speak the truth, and with these words open the door to a civilization that will stand forever and never fade despite the rigors of time!
Introduction: Greetings! I see the favor of the spirit of God on you. Come, let us share what we know of the Creator.
Introduction: Welcome to the beautiful lands of the Coast Salish. Your countenance is a gift to me from the Creator.
Defeat: God has not abandoned us. One day, when you least expect it, we will return in numbers.
