Overview[]

The Almoravids[]

The Almoravid dynasty was a Berber muslim dynasty centered in Morocco that ruled over parts of the Maghreb and Al-Andalus. The term Almoravid specifically refers to the idea of the ribat, an Islamic term for fortress found in North Africa. The dynasty was founded on the principals of Malikite law, and was perhaps one of the most influential of Moroccan dynasties, having expanded the presence of Morocco in Al-Andalus greatly. During this period, the city of Marrakech was founded, and the economy and arts of Morocco flourished. The greatest military success of the Almoravid dynasty are best exemplified with their expansions into Iberia, and the subjugation of El Cid's revolt. However, Almoravid power began to weaken after their loss of Zaragoza in 1118, and the dynasty finally fell to the rival Almohads in 1147. Despite lasting a little less than 100 years, the Almoravid dynasty has left a permanent mark on Morocco's history.

Zaynab an-Nafzawiyyah[]

Zaynab an-Nafzawiyyah was a Berber noblewoman who served as Queen of the Almoravid Empire. She was the de facto co-ruler of Yusuf ibn Tashfin during his wars with El Cid in Iberia.

May fortune favor you, Zaynab an-Nafzawiyyah of the Almoravid dynasty! It was your prudent guidance during your co-rule with your husband, Yusuf ibn Tashfin, that led the Almoravids to glory. Known for your wealth, wisdom, and political guidance, you gave women a place in the Moroccan courts unlike many other nations in the world. As for your husband, his military ambitions led to a great expansion of the Almoravid borders, and the defeat of the Valencian prince El Cid.

Alas, it wasn’t even 100 years since the dynasty’s founding that the Almoravids fell from power and gave way to the Almohads. The people of Morocco, however, still hold the memories of your reign in their hearts! Can you fortify the heart of the Islamic world against foreign incursion? Can you build vast cities across the barren deserts? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Mashallah friend, I don't think we've been introduced. I am Zaynab, and this handsome devil is my husband, Yusuf. I'll be doing the talking, though. As for Yusuf, just pray you never have to hear from him."

Introduction: "Mashallah, let me introduce myself. I am Zaynab, and this is my husband, Yusuf. Disregard him for now, though- I'm the one who handles negotiations."

Defeat: "You may grind us down, but our love will go on..."
