Overview[]
Teotihuacan[]
Teotihuacan, located twenty-seven miles northeast of present-day Mexico City, was one of the largest, if not the largest city of the ancient Americas. At its height in ca. 400 CE, the city covered eight square miles and was home to an estimated population of 125,000–200,000 residents. The culture is renowned for the large scale and ceremonial grandeur of its monumental architecture, built ca. 100–250 CE; introduction of collectivized residential structures known as apartment compounds between around 250–550 CE; and development of many complex arts, including mural painting, mold-pressed ceramics, and stone sculpture. Teotihuacan interacted with several important contemporary Maya capitals, including Tikal, Guatemala and Copán, Honduras and also developed relations with the Zapotec of Monte Albán, Oaxaca. In around 550 CE, the city’s core monuments were burned by unidentified persons. After 600 CE Teotihuacan’s population dropped markedly, and from 600–800 CE the city was probably home to 30,000 or fewer residents. Nonetheless, Teotihuacan’s legacy continued to resonate throughout Mesoamerica for at least a millennium, and still astounds those who look upon the works left by these magnificent people centuries later.
Spearthrower Owl[]
The Spearthrower Owl, or "Atlatl Cauac", is the name of a figure that appears in Maya inscriptions throughout Mesoamerica (364-439 AD) from the Early Classic period. The name Spearthrower Owl describes the appearance of the figure that is holding a spear and shares owl-like features. Strongly suggested to be a ruler of Teotihuacan (though what kind of ruler beyond the title of the Mayan "Ajaw", we are unsure), Spearthrower Owl (also known as Jatz'om Kuy in Mayan) ruled for roughly 65 years in the golden age of Classical Teotihuacan. He was most famous for his expeditions to the Mayan city-state of Tikal as mentioned in the city-state's glyphs, setting a precedent for further imperialistic actions by Teotihuacan into the Mayan heartlands and beyond.
Dawn of Man[]
May the sun and the moon shine ever brightly over your reign, Spearthrower Owl. You are at the helm of one of Mesoamerica's greatest cities, the illustrious Teotihuacan. Once a humble trading city, the deadly volcanoes Popocatépetl and Mount Xitle would drive thousands towards the lands of Teotihuacan in search of a better life. Through this population boom, and a brilliant urban design that would accomodate such diverse peoples, Teotihuacan transformed into a cosmopolitan paradise. Obsidian flowed like water into the city, adorning the blades of its elite armies, decorating the awe-inspiring temples that arose such as the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, and arrived in droves into lesser states that quickly became a part of Teotihuacan's imperial sphere. Such was the power of Teotihuacan that the Mayans, separated by a vast sea of jungle and mountains, were subjugated and brought under the Teotihuacano heel, shaping the culture of the area for generations. Even when the city finally waned under the fires of rebellion, it would not be forgotten, being revered by the later Aztecs as the place where the Gods came down to bring wisdom to an unenlightened world.
Noble Spearthrower Owl, conqueror of the Mayans and master of the pyramids, people from all corners of the world look to you and your city for guidance and salvation. Will you honor the Great Goddess and make Teotihuacan a place where any man may become a God? Will you bring the lesser world until your sway, through commerce or conquest? Can you build a civilization that stands the test of time?
