Overview[]

Svalbard[]

The Svalbard Archipelago, centred around the main island of Spitsbergen, has been over time a prominent whaling port, a key mining base, and now, a scientific heartland. The chain was first formally discovered by Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz in 1596, although there are reports of Norse and Russian migrants encountering the southern islands. By 1611 the archipelago, called Spitsbergen after the largest island, had firmly become a Dutch and English whaling harbor, around the station of Smeerenburg. Whaling died off, and by the 19th Century the only remaining whalers were Norwegian. Explorations within the islands took place to find new whaling grounds, but these gradually turned into scientific expeditions.

The first mining operation began in 1906, with the establishment of Longyearbyen (the first permanent settlement in the islands' history), followed by Barentsburg and several others. The Svalbard Treaty of 1925 officially changed the name of the islands, and granted Norway sovereignty on the archipelago, but banned 'warlike activities' and allowed a free right to mine. By 1930, all the operations in force on the islands were Norwegian or Soviet, and were abandoned during the Second World War. After tensions during the Cold War, a formal 'normalization' process was undertaken to bring Svalbard into a normal community. With the turn of the millenium, there has been an emphasis on scientific advancement, with a university set up in Longyearbyen, and the establishment of Ny-Ålesund as a crucial point for climate research.

Odd Olsen Ingerø[]

Odd Olsen Ingerø is a Norwegian civil servant, and has held multiple roles, notably as both the longest serving Governor of Svalbard, or "sysselmann", and as the only man to have held the position twice. He took the position in 2001, succeeding Morten Ruud, and continuing the islands' transition from a despondent territory following the end of mining in the cold war era to a scientific and naturalistic hotspot.

After departing for five years in 2005 to become head of Kripos, the Norwegian special police force, he returned in 2009 and saw the expansion of the islands' flagship project, the Global Seed Vault, go from strength to strength. Having finished his extended term of six years in 2015, he is now retired. He leaves behind a legacy of a reinvigorated, replenished territory, no longer hamstrung by the empty coal veins that cast doubt in Spitsberger minds. He was a man of the islands as much as any born there: often he flew in rescue helicopters, working a farm on the islands with his daughter, and taking part in conservation efforts. He described himself in interviews as an 'anti-politician', and that mentality of being open, honest, and part of the community is evidenced in what he leaves behind.

Greetings, Odd Olsen Ingerø, esteemed Governor of the Svalbard Territory! Throughout your two terms you have given all to serve the people of the islands, and have brought the archipelago into a state of never-before-seen prosperity! Under your leadership, the islands have moved out of the dark years following the end of mining operations, and become a crucial centre for conservation and research. The crowning glory of the territory, the Global Seed Vault, has flourished under your hand into one of the greatest scientific and tourist attractions in Scandinavia. After a decade of leadership, you retired, leaving behind you a strong, happy place, undoubtedly the greatest of Svalbard's directors.

Governor Ingerø! Hostile foes seek to take your islands and destroy all you worked so hard to accomplish! Now in their time of greatest need, will you return to the fold, rebuild the industry, and inspire your people once more? Can you lead them to the endeavour they have always thristed for? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Greetings, friend, and welcome to Svalbard! I am Odd Olsen Ingerø, governor of this place- shall we sit by the fire?"

Introduction: "Ah, friend, you seem to have travelled far out of the way to get here. This is Svalbard, and I welcome you as its governor."

Defeat: "So this is it? Alas, I hope your armies are prepared, for though I will not see it, a long and painful winter is coming."

Defeat: "Is this goodbye? It seems it. Very well, I promise that the world will not forget what you have done here."
