Overview[]
Sunda refers to many polities that have existed and thrived on the western side of Java, where Jakarta is today. The Sunda Kingdom and the Galuh Kingdom both refer to parts of West Java in the pre-Islamic period of history. Influence shifted continually between the western half of Sunda and the eastern half of Sunda throughout history. But Sunda as a whole has always been constrained to the western side of the Pamli and Serayu rivers, east of which lie the various Javanese polities throughout history.
But before the start of Sunda, there was the Kingdom of Tarumanagara, which reigned fro about four centuries before its collapse int he 7th century AD. Tarumanagara was the earliest polity on Java that we have a record of. It ruled in the northwestern portions of Java primarily, near modern-day Jakarta. It's said that the kingdom was founded by Indian nobles fleeing from the collapse of the Gupta Empire. Oral histories also describe the capital of this kingdom to be called Sunda Pura and the origins of Sunda as a term.
Sunda[]
After the collapse of Tarumanagara, Sunda and Galuh established their seats of power further inland and away from Banten where the Srivijayan presence then waned over the centuries. Our historical sources are lacking as the capital of Sunda, Pakuan Pajajaran was only uncovered from the jungle during the Dutch colonial period. We know a lot more about the day to day life and the rituals of the interplay of Hinduism, Buddhism and the native ancestral religion Sunda Wiwitan, than we do about its various kings. Mostly this is because of various manuscripts and oral traditions that have survived combined with the relative peace and prosperity of the period.
Of the little that we do know, we know of confusing relations between Sunda, Galuh and the various other polities in Java. Many times, the intertwining royalties of Sunda and Galuh would see them unite and reunite again and again, either as a personal union of the king or as a real unification. The truth is most likely some more complex system that does not fit our understanding of independent states in the modern sense.
Prabu Siliwangi[]
Although we don't have many clear historical accounts of the exact back and forths of the various kings of Sunda and Galuh, we have a rich repertoire of stories about Prabu Siliwangi, a semi-historical figure whose myths are based on various kings of Sunda. Of these, the most likely historical king is Sri Baduga Maharaja, who moved the government seat from the Galuh capital of Kawali back to Pakuan for the last time in 1482.
He faced off the incoming Islamic states, including Demak and Cirebon, the latter of which had broken off from Galuh recently. Sri Baduga Maharaja established several sacred estates, of Balai, and acted within the accordance of Sunda Wiwitan. and exercised his power through the Hindu Ten Bakti system to make agriculture, particularly pepper plants, more efficient. The golden age was ushered and supported by this system long established in Sunda-Galuh to create a chain of responsibilities and devotion up to the king and the gods above.
Dawn of Man[]
Almighty King of Sunda and Galuh, Prabu Siliwangi, king of deities. Your excellency led the Sundanese people and united their split kingdoms into one centred on the mighty city of Pakuan Pajajaran. After an evil usurper murdered the king, you climbed your way back onto the throne and ushered a long era of peace and prosperity. You upheld Sunda Wiwitan against the invading Islamic foes from Cirebon, but, with the mark of a true noble, held steady against attacking your own kin.

Alas, the foes have destroyed the throne in Pakuan. The collapse of the Ten Bakti has thrown Java into disarray. Will you return from the mountains to reclaim your throne? Can you regain support and recreate the peace and prosperity of your reign? Can you build a civilisation that will stand the test of time?!
Introduction: "We greet your arrival. Sunda is a rich land, do not disturb us or you will have to face me."
Defeat: "You may have taken Pakuan, but my spirit is eternal! The tiger hyang will roam the lands forever more."
