Sparta led by Agesilaus II is a custom civilization mod by ExplosiveWatermelon, with contributions from Lungora.
Overview[]
Sparta[]
Sparta, also known as Lacedaemon, was an ancient Greek city-state known for its military prowess and valor. They notably defended Greece against Persian invasion at the battle of Thermopylae, and later defeated Athens and the Delian League during the Peloponnesian War. After the defeat of Athens, Sparta reached their apex under king Agesilaus II, before quickly being reduced to city-state status once more. Their militaristic culture and legal reforms have led to Sparta's association with brutal training- thus coining the term "Spartan Education," referencing Sparta's training regime of the agoge.
Agesilaus II[]
Agesilaus II is often considered as the most important King in Sparta's history. Although Leonidas I may garner more recognition, it was actually under Agesilaus' reign that the Spartan hegemony reached its apex. Agesilaus II was born lame, however he was spared as he was not heir-apparent at the time. Despite rough beginnings, Agesilaus II was known to have completed the rigorous Spartan education of the agoge, and likely became a member of the Krypteia- an early counter-intelligence organization of Sparta's military. It was also known that Agesilaus had become the young lover of Lysander, a Spartan political and military leader.
In the first year of Agesilaus' rule, documented by the historian Xenophon, a Spartan known as Cinadon rose up. Agesilaus promptly uncovered this plot and had all members executed, including Cinadon. With the support of his advisor, Lysander, Agesilaus launched a successful invasion of Asia Minor, potentially even plotting to invade Persia further. However, with the weak settlement of the war, Sparta was betrayed by their allies in Corinth and Thebes. Agesilaus then returned to Sparta in order to defend his state, however he promised to return to Asia Minor- an oath he would never fulfill. Indeed, the betrayal of Sparta by two of its closest allies had spelled the end of the Spartan Hegemony, although Agesilaus desperately tried to recover Sparta's former glory. On his way home from a voyage to Egypt, he died at age 84, after a reign of 41 years. Historical accounts of Agesilaus' reign vary in their judgement, however his military accomplishments are still noted by many.
