Overview[]
So[]
The So Clan is a Japanese noble house known for governing the island of Tsushima between the 13th and 19th centuries. The So were heavily involved with both mainland Japan as well as the Korean peninsula, often acting as a base for Wokou pirates that would plunder the Korean coastline. During the 15th century, the So were able to normalize relations with Joseon and monopolize incoming trade, greatly inflating their wealth and power in excess of their small territory.
So Yoshitoshi[]
So Yoshitoshi was the twenty-second head of the So clan, becoming daimyo of Tsushima in the late Sengoku era after the conquests of Toyotomi Hideyoshi but before the climactic Battle of Sekigahara. Yoshitoshi was a skilled commander and diplomat, using his knowledge and experience to lead the first assaults on Busan during Toyotomi's invasion of Korea in 1592.
Dawn of Man[]
Greetings to you, So Yoshitoshi, Lord of Tsushima Province - the great gateway between Japan and the kingdoms of Asia. Tsushima's strategic position between Kyushu and Korea has fostered a unique culture and history. It is both a land of stalwart defense and international overtures, of great diplomats and seafaring pirates. The So Clan emerged on the island in the 13th century during and after the Mongol invasions, and came to power in the 14th century at the dawn of the Sengoku Jidai. The So quickly monopolized trade with the outside world, their wealth and power more than making up for their small territory.

Strategy[]
The So Clan rule Tsushima from the sea as a naval, mercantile civilization with various routes for commerce or conquest. The core component of So is their Unique Ability, Treaty of Gyehae, which grants any cities that receive a Naval Trade Route from So a special building upon completion - the Wakan. Once established, the Wakan will further increase the Gold yield of Trade Routes to this City - and, if a City-State, will additionally yield Influence with that City-State for So. Furthermore, any of So's military units within three tiles of a City containing a Wakan will heal every turn - an ideal repair stop for allies with Open Border or City-States, or an equally useful staging ground for a future invasion should you turn on your former trade partner. Trade with as many coastal cities as you can in the early game to widen your options in the late game, and remember where Wakans have been established to make use of their military benefits.
The So Unique Unit is the Bahansen, a replacement for the Privateer. This pirate ship gains Gold from defeating enemy units, but truly excels along the coast where it can use a special ability to pillage adjacent land tiles. In addition, the Bahansen may enter the territory of rival civilizations without Open Borders as long as it is within five tiles of a city with a Wakan, meaning it can enter and take advantage of the Wakan's passive healing while raiding distant shores. The Bahansen is a formidable Gold-producing tool that can operate and support itself independently as a coastal raider, so consider sending them to steal from remote civilizations that pose no direct threat.
So's Unique Building is the Ofunae, which replaces the Harbor. The Ofunae has different effects depending on if So is at peace or at war. While at peace, the Ofunae grants extra Food and also increases the range of the city's Naval Trade Routes, allowing So to trade and establish Wakans in ever more distant cities. While at war, the Ofunae provides extra Production towards Naval Units and grants them the Coastal Raider II promotion when trained, allowing you to quickly build or reinforce your navy and send them directly to plunder enemy cities.
