Overview[]
So[]
The So Clan is a Japanese noble house known for governing the island of Tsushima between the 13th and 19th centuries. The So were heavily involved with both mainland Japan as well as the Korean peninsula, often acting as a base for Wokou pirates that would plunder the Korean coastline. During the 15th century, the So were able to normalize relations with Joseon and monopolize incoming trade, greatly inflating their wealth and power in excess of their small territory.
So Yoshitoshi[]
So Yoshitoshi was the twenty-second head of the So clan, becoming daimyo of Tsushima in the late Sengoku era after the conquests of Toyotomi Hideyoshi but before the climactic Battle of Sekigahara. Yoshitoshi was a skilled commander and diplomat, using his knowledge and experience to lead the first assaults on Busan during Toyotomi's invasion of Korea in 1592.
Dawn of Man[]
Greetings to you, So Yoshitoshi, Lord of Tsushima Province - the great gateway between Japan and the kingdoms of Asia. Tsushima's strategic position between Kyushu and Korea has fostered a unique culture and history. It is both a land of stalwart defense and international overtures, of great diplomats and seafaring pirates. The So Clan emerged on the island in the 13th century during and after the Mongol invasions, and came to power in the 14th century at the dawn of the Sengoku Jidai. The So quickly monopolized trade with the outside world, their wealth and power more than making up for their small territory.
Great Daimyo, the island now falls under your leadership. Will you take Tsushima into a new age of prosperity? Can you protect Japan from foreign invasion? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
Introduction: Welcome. I am So Yoshitoshi, Lord of Tsushima Province. I hope we can conduct our trade amicably, so that you need not fear us on the seas.
Introduction: I am So Yoshitoshi, of Tsushima Province. On behalf of the So Clan, I welcome you to our humble holdings.
Defeat: The wind blows against our sails today.

Strategy[]
So is a naval civilization that can be played peacefully, focusing on defense and trade, or aggressively as an island-based raider. The cornerstone of the civ is the special Wakan building, which as part of their Unique Ability may be built for the coastal cities of declared friends and friendly city-states. Once these buildings are in place, So's naval units will gain a +35% combat strength bonus when within 5 tiles of any city containing a Wakan, creating a large area of effectiveness for the So navy. This combat boost will come in extremely useful when defending allies from barbarians and invaders. Of course, should So decide to turn on their foreign friends, the Wakan will continue to provide the bonus even as its own city is invaded.
So's normal unique building is the Ofunae, which replaces the Harbor. In addition to the usual effects of the Harbor, the Ofunae has different abilities depending on whether So is at peace or at war. At peace, a city that has an Ofunae trading with a city that possesses a Wakan will gain Food equal to the amount of Gold generated by the trade route. Otherwise, if So is at war, naval units trained in a city with an Ofunae will begin with the Boarding Party II promotion, making them extremely deadly at sea right off the bat. If playing peacefully, be sure to position your Wakan buildings within trade range and link them up with trade routes from your Ofunae cities. If playing aggressively, keep producing naval units while at war to take advantage of their free promotions.
The So unique unit is the Bahanbune, replacing the Privateer. This pirate ship gains Gold from destroying an enemy vessel equal to double the victim's combat strength. It is also capable of freely entering rival territory and, if within the 5-tile range of a Wakan, may heal at double rate even outside of friendly territory. Feel free to send your Bahanbune on long expeditions and heal them at safe ports with a Wakan, where they will also gain the extra combat strength from So's unique ability.
