Overview[]
Shu Han[]
Shu Han, officially known as just Han, was one of the three major states that competed for supremacy over China in the Three Kingdoms period. The state was based in the area around present-day Hanzhong, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou, and north Guangxi, an area historically referred to as "Shu" based on the name of the past ancient state of Shu, which also occupied this approximate geographical area. Shu Han's founder Liu Bei had named his state "Han" as he considered it the legitimate successor to the Han dynasty, while the prefix "Shu" was first used by the rival state of Cao Wei to delegitimize the sovereignty claims of the Shu Han state. Later on when writing the Records of the Three Kingdoms, the historian Chen Shou also used the prefix "Shu" to describe Liu Bei's state of Han as a geographical prefix to differentiate it from the many other states named "Han" throughout Chinese history.
Liu Bei[]
Liu Bei was a warlord in the late Eastern Han dynasty who founded the state of Shu Han in the Three Kingdoms period and became its first ruler. Although Liu claimed descent from one of the early Han emperors, he grew up in poverty. Distinguishing himself in battle in the great Yellow Turban Rebellion that broke out at the end of the Han, he eventually became one of the leading Han generals and a rival of the other great general, Cao Cao. Liu Bei occupied the area in central China around Sichuan. After Cao Pi, the son of Cao Cao, usurped the Han throne in 220, Liu Bei founded his own dynasty. Liu retained the name Han for his new dynasty, and his is usually known as Shu Han to distinguish it from the Han proper. As one of the heroes of the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liu has been celebrated and romanticized in Chinese history. The dynasty that he founded, however, never expanded much beyond Sichuan and lasted less than 45 years.
Dawn of Man[]
"Venerable Liu Bei, you grace us with your presence! Rising from humble and destitute origins despite your noble blood, you emerged as one of the greatest commanders in the tumultuous last years of the Eastern Han dynasty, admired as much for your virtuous character as your military brilliance. Following the collapse of Han authority and the usurpation of much of the empire by the brutal Cao Cao, you seized control of much of southwestern China under the banner of Han loyalism, declaring a new Han Empire under your benevolent leadership! Despite the superior position of your rivals, Shu Han emerged briefly as a state in its own right, and you were revered as a humane and magnanimous emperor - a status synonymous with the name Liu Bei to this day!
Oh great Liu Bei, the people of China once more call on you to act as their emperor, desperate for your benevolent hand! Will you overcome your rivals and cement your rule? Will your ideal governance lead your people on to glory and prosperity? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"
Introduction: "I bid you welcome to the true Han Empire. I have pledged to rule these lands with wisdom and virtue - and those who stand in the way of virtue shall fail!"
Defeat: "So be it. All men have their appointed time, and that cannot be changed. I weep for the future, but am now powerless to change it."
