The Shimazu Clan led by Shimazu Yoshihisa is a custom civilization by PorkBean, with contributions from Senshi and DarthKyofu.
This mod requires Brave New World.
Overview[]
Shimazu[]
The Shimazu clan of Satsuma Province were for centuries one of the most powerful families on the island of Kyushu. During the Sengoku period, the Shimazu under the leadership of Yoshihisa and his three brothers launched a lightning conquest of their home island, defeating their rival clans and taking nearly every province in the region. In later centuries, the Shimazu were instrumental in the establishment of the Satcho Alliance that fought against Tokugawa forces and restored power to the emperor in the middle of the 19th century.
Shimazu Yoshihisa[]
Shimazu Yoshihisa was the head of the Shimazu family from 1566 until his retirement in 1587. Though not a battlefield commander, Yoshihisa was a skilled administrator who strategically used the talents of his generals, particularly his three siblings, to outmaneuver and outplay the rival clans of Kyushu. After the Kyushu Campaign brought the island under the control of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Yoshihisa stepped back to become a Buddhist monk and allowed his brother Yoshihiro to ascend to clan head, but some believe that even from the monastery Yoshihisa continued to be truly in control.
Dawn of Man[]
Welcome, Lord Shimazu Yoshihisa, head of the great house of Shimazu! After the Shimazu lands in Southern Kyushu were at last reunified thanks to the efforts of your predecessors, it was up to you to bring stability and prosperity to Satsuma and beyond. Though rarely on the battlefield yourself, you proved a cunning strategist and carefully applied the marshal brilliance of your brothers - Yoshihiro, Toshihisa, and Iehisa - to conquer the smaller clans surrounding your territory, and to eventually eclispe your great rivals, the Otomo.
Lord Shimazu, though your rule over Kyushu was cut short by the overwhelming forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, all is not lost! Will you reclaim your ancestral territory and rule Satsuma once again? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
Introduction: I am Yoshihisa, head of the Shimazu clan. I believe a great destiny lies ahead for my family.
Introduction: Welcome to Satsuma, foreign lord. I am Shimazu Yoshihisa. Have you met my brothers Yoshihiro, Toshihisa and Iehisa?
Defeat: A pity I never had a chance to show my bravery in a battle. I waited here, for news of my brothers' victories.
Defeat: I pray my life as a monk will be more glorious than my life as a ruler.

Strategy[]
Shimazu is a Domination/Science civ focused on strategic use of their abilities to overwhelm their foes. Although the Shimazu unique components have simple effects, they can be used together to manufacture a considerable advantage in combat.
The Shimazu Unique Ability, Tsurinobuse, grants all melee, gunpowder, mounted and armor units an additional line of promotions alongside Shock and Drill. Tsurinobuse promotions give the unit a chance to retreat from combat when targeted by a melee attack. This is a useful ability on its own, granting your units that extra line of survivability, but particularly comes in to play when used as part of a wider tactical ploy.
The Shimazu Unique Unit is the Tanegashima Infantry, a Musketman replacement that comes a whole tech earlier at Physics. Though it is 15% more expensive to build than the base unit, this can be offset by the Unique Ability which also bestows a 25% reduction in production cost towards gunpowder units, as long as you have an active research agreement. The Tanegashima Infantry comes with a 50% flanking attack bonus, making it an excellent support for those units promoted along the Tsurinobuse line. A tactially-minded player should promote units with high mobility (such as mounted units) with Tsurinobuse, then position Tanegashima Infantry behind them to shred enemy units as they are dragged into their line of fire.
Finally, Shimazu's Unique Building is the Ryugen-ji. This Temple replacement provides a nice amount of Science as a base yield, and also grants a burst of Science when a foreign Missionary or Great Prophet is expended near the city. If you are not interested in a religion of your own, allow rival civilizations to attempt to convert you and reap the rewards in Science.
