Senegal[]
The Republic of Senegal is a country in West Africa. Senegal is bordered by Mauritania in the north, Mali to the east, Guinea to the southeast, and Guinea-Bissau to the southwest. Senegal also borders The Gambia, a country occupying a narrow sliver of land along the banks of the Gambia River, which separates Senegal's southern region of Casamance from the rest of the country. Senegal also shares a maritime border with Cape Verde. Senegal's economic and political capital is Dakar.
Léopold Senghor[]
Achieving major success as a poet, politician, and intellectual, Léopold Senghor has had a truly unique identity among African leaders. His development from tribal member in Senegal, to scholar in France, to head of the government back in Senegal made him a symbol of Africa's shift from colonial domination to self-determination.

"It is said that there is no peace without understanding, Léopold Sédar Senghor, and you have achieved more peace than most. Your sixteen years of wandering earnt you the first African agrégé, and very soon you became a teacher and a leader for all of Senegal. With it, you built a nation on African socialism – one with care and understanding rather than one roiling with rage. With you as her new president, Senegal gained modern education, forged close friendships with her neighbors, and dueled corruption and inefficiency alike. Seasoned with the salt of negritude, this new Senegal stepped out into the brave new world as a new nation, but an old people.
