Overview[]

Ryukyu[]

The Ryukyu Kingdom was a kingdom in the Ryukyu Islands that lasted from 1429 to 1879. It was ruled as a tributary state of imperial Ming China by the Ryukyuan monarchy, who unified Okinawa Island to end the Sanzan period, and extended the kingdom to the Amami Islands and Sakishima Islands. The Ryukyu Kingdom played a central role in the maritime trade networks of medieval East Asia and Southeast Asia despite its small size. The Ryukyu Kingdom became a vassal state of the Satsuma Domain of Japan after the invasion of Ryukyu in 1609 but retained de jure independence until it was transformed into the Ryukyu Domain by the Empire of Japan in 1872. The Ryukyu Kingdom was formally annexed and dissolved by Japan in 1879 to form Okinawa Prefecture.

Sho Shin[]

Sho Shin was the third king of the second Sho dynasty of the Ryukyu Kingdom. His reign was described as a period of great peace and relative prosperity. He was the son of Sho En, the founder of the dynasty.

Lead your trading kingdom into its golden age, oh Sho Shin of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was you who reformed your kingdom's administration to create a much more centralised and stable state. In order to tie your local lords, the aji, to your kingdom's administration and economy, you gathered all their weapons and ordered them to your capital, Shuri, to separate them from their land and weaken the likelihood of revellion. It was under you that the Shuri dialect of the Okinawan language was standarised, with poetry and literature blossoming, and new temples and a grand palace with Dragon Pillars constructed. But it was in trade that your kingdom led, with economic specialisation and integration allowing for the production of luxury goods and the spread of Ryukyuan ships across East Asia. After a fifty year reign, you died in 1526, with officials unable to remember the procedure of a royal funeral it had been such a long and stable reign.

Oh glorious Sho Shin, use your networks to trade with your neighbours, and reform your state to build a magnificent kingdom. Can you lead your kingdom into a golden age? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: Welcome to the glorious Kingdom of Ryukyu! I am Sho Shin, Ryukyu-koku Chuzan-o, please enjoy the many goods our merchants can offer you.

Defeat: Thus, I resign my kingdom to the domination of those which do not wish to see it flourish.
