Overview[]
Rome[]
The Roman Empire is the most remarkable and long-lived political entity in the history of Western Civilization. It was founded around the 8th century BC, and portions of it survived until the 14th century AD. The Romans were great innovators in some areas, and they were not shy about appropriating good ideas they found in other cultures. They greatly shaped Western culture, law, art, architecture, religion, language, and warfare.
Trajan[]
Trajan - born Marcus Ulpius Traianus - was a Roman emperor, the second of the "Five Good Emperors." He was famed for bringing the Roman Empire to its greatest-ever territorial extent, as well as for his building projects and social welfare policies.
Trajan was born in 53 AD in southern Spain, near the modern city of Seville. Though he is often called the first provincial emperor, his family was already a highly esteemed one; Trajan's father had been a senator and served as a general in the First Jewish-Roman War. Trajan himself began his career as a successful military officer all along the Roman frontier, and was eventually appointed consul in 91. He would then go on to be named as the adoptive son and heir to the emperor Nerva in 97, and upon Nerva's death the following year, he became emperor himself.
Trajan's reign was most famous for its military achievements. He fought two wars against Dacia, in 101-102 and 105-106 respectively; the first weakened Dacia, but allowed it to retain its client-kingdom status, while the second reduced it entirely to a Roman colony. Shortly afterward, the death of the client-king Rabbel Soter allowed Rome to annex Nabataea as well. Trajan's final major campaign, lasting from 113 to his death, was against Parthia. He began this campaign by annexing Armenia (then a Parthian puppet) and proceeded onward to Mesopotamia in 115. He pushed as far as the Persian Gulf, and secured Mesopotamia as a Roman province, but his health began to fail during this period; Trajan headed back toward the imperial heartland throughout 117, and died in Cilicia that August.
Trajan was also renowned for his internal accomplishments. One of his early actions was the creation of the correctores - agents to audit the civic finances of Greek cities and curb overspending and internal competition. This position also had the additional benefit of being an office Trajan could use to reward his preferred senators, giving the Senate an incentive to seek his favor. Trajan also formalized the welfare system known as the alimenta, which provided food, money, and education to the needy.
During Trajan's periods of peace, he was a prolific builder. He honored his victories in Dacia by building a forum and market in Rome, as well as his eponymous column; he also oversaw much construction in Hispania and Egypt. Trajan also built many roads on the Italian peninsula and in the Near East. Overall, so great and diverse were his achievements that the Senate termed him "Optimus Princeps" - the best prince.
Dawn of Man[]
All who hear your name are awed by the sound, Emperor Trajan, greatest ruler of mighty Rome. The Roman Empire was powerful indeed when you took the throne, but under your lead the legions of Rome conquered all who stood against them, swelling their borders to include all lands bordering the Mediterranean. You inherited an empire marred by strife between the throne and the Senate, but despite your autocratic and independent methods, which largely ignored the desires of the Senators, you ruled so well that they declared you the Optimus Princeps (best ruler) and, after your death, even to be a god.
