Overview[]

Rome[]

The Roman Empire is the most remarkable and long-lived political entity in the history of Western Civilization. It was founded around the 8th century BC, and portions of it survived until the 14th century AD. The Romans were great innovators in some areas, and they were not shy about appropriating good ideas they found in other cultures. They greatly shaped Western culture, law, art, architecture, religion, language, and warfare.

Tiberius[]

Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus was the second Roman emperor, reigning from 14-37. Early in his career, Tiberius was happily married to Vipsania, daughter of Augustus' friend, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. They had a son, Drusus Julius Caesar. After Agrippa died, Augustus insisted that Tiberius divorce Vipsania and marry his own daughter, Julia. Tiberius reluctantly gave in. This second marriage proved scandalous, deeply unhappy, and childless. On Augustus' death in 14, Tiberius became princeps at the age of 55. Tiberius seems to have taken on the responsibilities of head of state with great reluctance, and perhaps a genuine sense of inadequacy in the role, compared to the capable, self-confident and charismatic Augustus. From the outset, Tiberius had a difficult, resentful relationship with the senate, and suspected many plots against him. Nevertheless, he proved to be an effective and efficient administrator. After the deaths of his nephew Germanicus in 19 AD and his son Drusus in 23, Tiberius became reclusive and aloof. In 26 he removed himself from Rome and left administration largely in the hands of his ambitious praetorian prefect Sejanus, whom he later had executed for treason, and then Sejanus' replacement, Macro. When Tiberius died, he was succeeded by his grand-nephew and adopted grandson, Germanicus' son Caligula.

Dawn of Man[]

"Hail, Tiberius, Princeps, Emperor of the Roman Empire. Your life was not a happy one. While you saw early military success, you were forced by Augustus into an unhappy marriage, divorcing your previously loved wife. After withdrawing from society, you became Augustus’ last hope as successor. Finally becoming Princeps, you clashed immediately with the Senate. This relationship did not improve, and after the death of your assumed successors, you withdrew to the island of Capri. Despite being an effective and efficient administrator, you left much administration in the hands of Sejanus, your Praetorian Prefect. But plots and treason saw family members killed, meaning you had to return and restore some semblance of order. When you died, very little was done to secure succession.

Reluctant Tiberius, you must return to the political fore. Rome must be built as a power once more, and it is up to you to lead it to the glory it formerly left in its past. You must once again prove your administrative prowess, and demonstrate why the Roman senatorial class, who despised you, lied in the histories for political gain. Can you, the Gloomiest of Men, prove that the histories were lies, and that you were in fact, a good leader? Will your civilization stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "What is it? Be done with it."

Defeat: "Nothing but the divine genius of Augustus was equal to this mighty task."
