Overview[]

Rome[]

The Roman Empire is the most remarkable and long-lived political entity in the history of Western Civilization. It was founded around the 8th century BC, and portions of it survived until the 14th century AD. The Romans were great innovators in some areas, and they were not shy about appropriating good ideas they found in other cultures. They greatly shaped Western culture, law, art, architecture, religion, language, and warfare.

Marcus Aurelius[]

Born Marcus Annius Verus on April 26, 121 from a Hispanic noble family, Marcus Aurelius grew up close to the center of power. When he was a child, the emperor Hadrian noticed him and punned on his name, Verus (True), calling him Verissimus (Truest) for his uprightness. In his final arrangement Hadrian, who had difficulty in choosing a successor, destined Marcus for ultimate rule, for when he adopted Marcus's uncle by marriage, Antoninus (soon to be known as Antoninus Pius), he had Antoninus adopt Marcus Aurelius along with the young Lucius Ceionius Commodus, later called Lucius Verus.

Dawn of Man[]

"Hail to you, Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, beloved philosopher-king. Few rulers can claim to match your wisdom and might, and fewer still can do so truthfully. Beset from all sides by powerful foes - Parthians, Armenians and Germanic tribes - you dutifully led your people to victory, using these experiences to enlighten yourself in the ways of Stoicism. Your writings on the matters of self-discipline in your personal Meditations remain fundamental to this day in stoic thinking, and you put them into practice with a heartfelt and sincere desire to do right by your people.

Zharques Marcus Aurelius LS

Art by Arilasqueto

Oh, merciful emperor, your people once again ask for your measured guidance and rational thinking in the face of great adversity. Can you prove anew your unparalleled virtue? Can you build a Rome that is as wise as it is glorious? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I am Marcus Aurelius, a seeker after knowledge. We Romans seek only to live in the present, in this fleeting moment. I hope that you are such a one, as well."

Defeat: "I have nothing to fear of death, for it, like birth, is one of life's mysteries."
