Overview

Rio Grande

The Riograndense Republic, also known as the Piratini Republic, was a de facto state that seceded from the Empire of Brazil and roughly coincided with the present state of Rio Grande do Sul. It was proclaimed on 11 September 1836, by General Antônio de Sousa Neto, as a direct consequence of the victory obtained by Gaúcho oligarchic forces at the Battle of Seival. It had a constitution adopted in 1843 and was recognised only by the United Kingdom, France, and Uruguay. The Riograndense Republic had five capitals during its nearly nine years of existence. The war between the Gaúchos and the Brazilian Empire was ended by the Ponche Verde Treaty.

Bento Gonçalves

Bento Gonçalves was a Brazilian army officer, politician, monarchist and rebel leader of the Riograndense Republic. He was the first President of the Riograndense Republic and, by all accounts, one of the most prominent figures in the history of Rio Grande do Sul. Although a staunch monarchist, Gonçalves led the rebel forces in the Ragamuffin War.

Dawn of Man

"Hail, Bento Gonçalves, President of the Riograndense Republic and avowed monarchist. It was a winding and contradictory path that led to you assuming the presidency of a breakaway state of Brazil. A loyal military man of Pedro I, you were arrested in the early days of the Ragamuffin War, spending much of the early stages of the war in a cell. Despite this, you were proclaimed president while in prison. After a failed escape attempt and meeting a number of new revolutionary comrades, a successful jailbreak saw you returned to the country fighting for its sovereignty. But internal politicking saw the country collapse.

Oh honourable Bento Gonçalves, you have been provided with a second opportunity. While it may go against every instinct of your being to once again rebel against your Brazil and cast aside your monarchical principles, the chance to leave a greater stamp of authority on the Riograndense Republic than the first time has been presented. You no longer need fear the cell, and to lead this new country would see many of your fellow man avoid the prospect of returning to slavery. Can you craft a new sovereign nation from nothing but the spirit of liberty and your grit and determination? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"
