Overview[]

Qin[]

The Qin dynasty was the first dynasty of Imperial China, lasting from 221 to 206 BC. Named for its heartland in Qin state (modern Gansu and Shaanxi), the dynasty was founded by Zheng (imperial title Qin Shi Huang), the First Emperor of Qin. The strength of the Qin state was greatly increased by the Legalist reforms of Shang Yang in the fourth century BC, during the Warring States period. In the mid and late third century BC, the Qin state carried out a series of swift conquests, first ending the powerless Zhou dynasty and eventually conquering the other six of the Seven Warring States. Its 15 years was the shortest major dynasty in Chinese history, consisting of only two emperors. Despite its short reign, however, the lessons and strategies of the Qin shaped the Han dynasty and became the starting point of the Chinese imperial system that lasted from 221 BC, with interruption, development, and adaptation, until 1912 AD.

Zheng[]

Born "Chao Cheng," Qin Shi Huang was the first to unify all of China. His father was ruler of "Qin," one of the seven dominant states in China; upon his death Cheng ascended the throne at the age of 13. However, rule was actually exercised by his prime minister until, at 22, Cheng assumed control of state affairs and stripped the minister of his powers.

Cheng quickly instituted a series of agricultural and military reforms that greatly strengthened Qin. In the next 17 years, Cheng defeated the other six great powers, uniting the divided lands for the first time. He then gave himself the title "Qin Shi Huang," which means "First Emperor."

The emperor was politically astute, using bribery, blackmail and espionage as much as force of arms to achieve his goals. He ruthlessly suppressed Confucianism, which set limits on the Emperor's power, going so far as to burn all books relating to China's past.

While emperor, Qin Shi Huang established a centralised administration and constructed a network of roads and canals. He also fought against the steppe peoples from the northern desert, and began construction of the Great Wall of China to set limits to their incursions. Though his reign lasted but ten years, it served to unite a people who would remain united for the next two millennia and beyond.

Power and strength to you, great King Zheng, founder of the Qin Dynasty. Ascending to rule over the Qin state in 221 BCE, you would rise to become the first emperor of a united China. With great cunning and ruthless ambition, you would set out to eliminate the Confucian ideals that had for centuries constrained the power of China's rulers. As emperor, your reforms and great building projects would come to cement a world in which you were centre, laying the groundwork for a state that persists to this day.

Qin Shi Huang, heaven has granted to you the power and duty of empire. But to forge it, you must construct a foundation upon which it can rise. Can you once again unite China beneath a powerful and central state? Can you impose your will upon the world and have it bow to your throne? Can you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: "I am Zheng, ruler of the great state of Qin and Huangdi of China. I trust you are here to offer tribute to me."

Defeat: "I have failed the fate granted to me by heaven. Perhaps it shall be you who is fated to unite China."
